Chalfont St Peter 4 Maidenhead 3

A highly successful penalty corner routine and two goals by Charlie Wooler helped Chalfont to an impressive but somewhat surprising victory in a friendly match at Wexham Park on Saturday. Maidenhead, who mounted sustained periods of second half pressure, floundered on the rock like performance of Mike Burge in teh Chalfont goal.
Neil Turner gave Chalfont the lead in the ninth minute completing a slick move at Chalfont's first penalty corner but Maidenhead responded with an equaliser two minutes later, Graham Sutherland's direct strike from a penalty corner giving Burge no chance.
Paul Arnott put Maidenhead in front for the first and only time from a penalty spot after Sam Preece's shot connected with a Chalfont foot, but it was a short-lived lead before Gavin Mander equalised at his second attempt from a penalty corner.
Twelve minutes after the interval Wooler restored Chalfont's lead from another penalty corner and although Arnott equalised from a second penalty stroke, following a crude challenge by Simon Shipley on Liam Ashton, Wooler struck with the winner four minutes from time, completing a fine move involving Mark McCree and Alastair Wertheim.

Henley 7 Chalfont St Peter 1

Chalfont, who came so close against Milton Keynes from the regional league in the Bucks Cup the previous Sunday, were unable to raise their game to hte same heights in a friendly match against First Division Henley on their new synthetic pitch at Mill Lane, Henley on Saturday.
Henley suffered a frustrating first half, despite their domination they were held at bay until the 29th minute when Michael Woolfrey eventually forced the ball past Alastair Wertheim.
It was a different story after the interval. Dan Herbert added a second in the second minute and two minutes later his brother Julian glided past the Chalfont defence before finishing spectacularly.
There wer further goals for Chris Green and Julian Herbert before Chalfont responded. A glorious overhead by Giles Payne released Mark McCree who squeezed the ball past Simon Sworn.
Woolfrey scored a second, Henley's ssixth was a well struck penalty corner and although Sworn suffered a temporary suspension, stand-in goalkeeper Kevin Woods acquitted himself well, making a fine save from Payne. In the final minute Ian Heggie put the seventh past Chalfont's dispirited defence.

Chalfont St Peter 1 Rover Cowley 2

Chalfont squandered a first half lead and went on to lose their final Eurosports and Leisure league match before the Christmas break at Beaconsfield High School on Saturday.
Giles Payne fired Chalfont into an eighteenth minute lead from the penalty spot after a robust and illegal challenge on Payne whilst he was striking a penalty corner had resulted in the award of a penalty stroke.
Despite another stalwart defensive performance by Alastair McCulloch, captaining the side for the first time in the absence of Mark Pearce, Cowley with Kevin Wharton playing a prominent role in midfield, came back strongly.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Nelson Ody produced a wonderful snap shot from Keith Milees' free hit to equalise for Cowley. Five minutes later, Stephen Mason found space in the Chalfont circle and although Mike Burge saved the first shot, he could do nothing as Mason forced in teh reboud. Chalfont had chances to equalise with Mark McCree and Alastair WErtheim mis-hitting in front of goal.

Chalfont St Peter 0 Witney 1

A thirteenth minute goal by John Turner, who squeezed in a close range shot, was enough to give second placed Witney victory in a Eurosports and Leisure league match at Cressex on Saturday.
Chalfont defended heroically for much of the first half, with Alastair McCulloch making several crucial tackles.  Inspired by some penetrating runs from Charlie Wooler, Chalfont wrestled control after the interval but were unable to force significant breaches in the Witney rearguard.
Giles Payne went closest for Chalfont, his fierce shot producing an athletic save by Chris Slatter in the Witney goal.  With six minutes remaining, Paul Woodworth missed a simple chance to increase Witney's lead when Mike Burge, Chalfont's goalkeeper, was stranded.

Chalfont St Peter 2 N.P.L. 1

Chalfont bounced back from last week's defeat to record their third win in the Eurosports and Leisure league with a positive and sustained effort, excelling all around the pitch at Wexham School on Saturday.
Fortified by decisive tackling in defence by David Dunford and Andrew Pearce and a dynamic midfield contribution from Mark Pearce and Charlie Wooler, Chalfont never allowed N.P.L. to settle into the form they showed when starting the league with three straight victories.
A five player move which finished with Mark McCree driving into the circle to set up Alastair Wertheim gave Chalfont the lead five minutes before half time.  A penalty corner four minutes after the interval provided  Chalfont's second goal.  N.P.L. goalkeeper Greg Davies did well to deny Andrew Pearce but was helpless as Giles Payne turned in the rebound.
Shortly afterwards Davies left the field with concussion but Mark Golding proved a reliable understudy and N.P.L. pulled a goal back in the 63rd minute when the Chalfont defence failed to cope with a run by Joe Dyer which allowed Andy Evans to score.   With three minutes remaining a splendid save by Mike Burge kept Chalfont's lead intact.

Brunel University College 4 Chalfont St Peter 0

Chalfont had goalkeeper Andrew Watts to thank for limiting the margin of defeat in a match the Students controlled throughout.
Brunel had to wait until 3 minutes before half-time before opening the scoring having endured an anxious moment when Mark Pearce shot narrowly wide following a break and cross by Andrew Pearce.
Ian Saunders took advantage of a loose ball in the circle to fire Brunel ahead but agile goalkeeping by Watts and some astute tackling by Alastair McCulloch restricted the students lead until the last 15 minutes when goals from James Harvey, Tim Mulholland and a slick penalty conversion by John Cuff reflected Brunel's dominance.

Chalfont St Peter 0 Rover Cowley 1

A misunderstanding regarding the starting time deprived Rover Cowley of their first Eurosport and Leisure league points when the two sides played a rescheduled friendly match at Chalfont Park on Saturday.
Showing little resemblance to a team at the bottom of the table, Cowley hung on to a sixth minute lead when Asheesh Sharma outstripped the Chalfont defence and Martin Heywood beat Mike Burge to score at the second attempt.
Cowley might have gone further ahead six minutes later, but Heywood, who along with Kevin Wharton was causing the Chalfont defence considerable problems, hit the post.
Chalfont emerged to exert a sustained period of pressure towards the end of the half.   Mark McCree made several forceful runs, and Paul Tappin in the Cowley goal did well to deny both Alastair Wertheim and Charlie Wooler.
Although Chalfont failed to control Th second half as tightly as the latter stages of the first half, there were chances at both ends.  Wertheim shot weakly when well placed and a fierce first time shot by Wooler produced an acrobatic save by Tappin.   Cowley's best chance fell to David Galbraith who hit the side board with the goal gaping.

Brunel University 1 Chalfont St Peter 3

Mark Pearce, Chalfont's captain returned to action in spite of a badly inflamed ankle and provided the inspiration for his side's victory in the Euro Sports and Leisure League at Brunel University (Uxbridge) on Saturday.
It was Pearce who gave Chalfont the lead four minutes before half time when Brunel gifted a clearance to Mark McCree whose accurate centre was forced in at short range.
A neatly switched penalty corner, converted by Giles Payne provided Chalfont's second early in the second half.  Although there was an anxious moment when Revan Jones hit the post with Chalfont goalkeeper Mike Burge stranded Chalfont secured the points ten minutes from time with Charlie Wooler finishing off a dazzling run by McCree.
Neil Turner should have made it four.  Put through by a glorious pass from Payne, he rounded Brunel goalkeeper Anthony Healey only to miss-hit in front of an open goal.   Alex Young scored a consolation goal for the students from a penalty stroke in the penultimate minute.

Chalfont St Peter 0 Bicester 7

Chalfont suffered their worst defeat for eight months in the Euro Sports and Leisure League at Cressex on Saturday against a rampant Bicester side who never looked back after taking a two goal lead in teh first ten minutes.
Wayne Dobbins pounced on a defensive mistake to fire Bicester into the lead and it was a foul on dobbins which led to Martin Turbayne increasing the lead from a penalty stroke.
Chalfont came back strongly with Mark McCree hitting the post and Simon Shipley having a shot well smothered but hte crucial moment came in the first minute of the second half when Dobbins caught the Chalfont defence cold to score his second goal.
Thereafter, despite some fine goal keeping from Mike Biurge inclduing a penalty stroke save to deny Dobbins a hat trick, the goals came at regular intervals with Turbayne completing a hat trick and a couple for Matt Marsh.
Not that it was entirely one way traffic.  McCree hit the post again, as did Shipley and Giles Payne blazed the ball over the bar with only the goalkeeper to bear. It was just not Chalfont's day.

Ramgarhia Slough 1 Chalfont St Peter 3

Chalfont's comfortable victory in their opening EuropSports and Leisure League match in a steady downpour at Wexham was sweet revenge for last year's 6-0 defeat.
Simon Shipley swept Chalfont into an 11th Minute lead, deflecting Mark Pearce's free hit into goal.  With Chris Blamey and Alistair McCulloch composed and authoritative in defence, Chalfont dominated the first half, playing some well structured hockey, but had to wait until 5 minutes after the interval for their second goal.
Mark McCree made the initial incision before slipping the ball to Alastair Wertheim whose deft pass set up Pearce for a well taken goal.
Ramgarhia pulled one back when Kali Saini took advantage of a penetrating pass from Narinder Bason.  Giles Payne confirmed Chalfont's superiority, beating Kuldip Panesar with a well placed low flick from a penalty corner with 12 minutes remaining.

Thames Valley 1 Chalfont St Peter 0

In their last friendly before the ESL league starts this Saturday, Chalfont lost a skilful and well contested match to the only goal eight minutes from time.
Derek Smith intercepted a weak Chalfont free hit to supply Matt Watts with the opportunity to drift past two defenders before beating Mike Burge with a flick into the far corner.
Early Thames Valley pressure, including a stream of penalty corners, was well absorbed by the Chalfont defence in which Alistair McCulloch, making a welcome return, played a prominent role.
Chalfont's best chances fell to Alistair Wertheim whose shot produced a good save from Derek Fry, and Simon Shipley who found the back of the net only to discover a penalty corner had been awarded.

Chalfont St. Peter 1 West Herts 1

Giles Payne, with a deflection from Mark Pearce's free hit, saved Chalfont scoring a deserved equaliser with 2 minutes remaining of a friendly match at Beaconsfield High School on Saturday.
Chalfont had trailed from the eighth minute when Danny Heyward with an uncharacteristic slip had allowed Mark Lythaby to open the scoring.
Thereafter, Heyward who formed an impressive partnership with Charlie Wooler another newcomer in t heart of the Chalfont defence kept the West Herts' attack at bay.
With Chalfont increasing the pressure Payne hit the post from a penalty stroke after Alastair Wertheim's shot was denied by a foot on the line.  Simon Shipley also hit the post following up a penalty corner before Payne's dramatic flourish.

Chalfont St Peter Hockey Club started their preparations for the winter season with an exciting 5-4 win against Old Merchant Taylors on Thursday with Giles Payne scoring a hat trick and the other goals coming from Gavin Mander and fourteen year old Andrew House.

On Saturday they lost 3-0 at Berkhamsted despite impressive performances by newcomers Bradbury Salisbury and goalkeeper Justin Drummond-Murray.
