Scoop Ladies' First XI 1997
Farnham Common Ladies 1 Chalfont St Peter Ladies 0
Nicky Jenner scored the only goal of a
desperately dull and disappointing friendly match at One Pin,
Farnham Common on Saturday with a firmly struck penalty corner
which took a helpful deflection to give Chalfont's goalkeeper
Katie McCoy no chance fifteen minutes from the end.
Despite Farnham Common's domination which produced fifteen
penalty corners, they were able to muster only one other shot on
target, also by Jenner which was taken off the line by Clair
McCoy.
Chalfont offered little in the way of threats at the other end. A
quickly taken free hit by Sarah Ottaway set up the indefatigable
Judi Burrows for a snap shot which was well saved by Mel Ive.
With ten minutes remaining, Heidi Jones joined the Chalfont
attack to fire a blistering shot inches wide.

Chalfont St Peter Ladies 4 Amersham 3
In a pulsating, Christmas cracker of a
friendly match Chalfont came back twice from behind to beat
Amersham at Newlands Park. Chalfont started strongly with Pippa
Brettle shooting just wide before going off with a neck injury.
Amersham took the lead after 13 minutes when Angela Scott pulled
up with a knee strain before she was about to make a crucial
tackle. This allowed Janet Carter to move into the circle and her
deflected shot looped over Katie McCoy in goal giving her no
chance. Chalfont played the rest of the half with 10 women but
still looked the more dangerous. Brettle rejoined the fray after
half time and helped Chalfont press forward, leading to a shot
from Becky Bazzard which was well saved.
Chalfont's equaliser came after 46 minutes when Judi Burrows
deflected in Heidi Jones' side line hit. Burrows then went close
with a reverse stick shot. Amersham took the lead again after 53
minutes when Carter slotted home from a penalty corner.
Three minutes later, Chalfont's second equaliser followed some
superb work by Sarah Ottaway at a penalty corner when she set
Brettle up to score. Brettle and Burrows then went close again
before Ottaway scored the winner with seven minutes left after
picking up a loose ball in front of goal following Jones side
line hit.

Marlow Ladies 3 Chalfont St Peter Ladies 1
Two goals by Andrea Hucton helped Marlow
to victory in a fluent and exciting friendly match at Cressex on
Saturday.
Marlow went ahead in the ninth minute when a penetrating centre
from Karen Langdridge was swept in first time by Hucton. With
Chalfont struggling to find their rhythm, despite some skilful
probing by Sarah Ottaway and Catherine Watson, Marlow went
further ahead in the fifteenth minute when Hucton beat Mo Burnley
at the near post from the edge of the circle.
Undaunted by the gap of two divisions between the teams Chalfont
responded with resolution and finesse. Judi Burrows went close to
scoring twice before hitting the post at a penalty corner.
Burrows' persistence eventually paid off when she scored with a
deft deflection from Pippa Brettle's cross in the 59th minute.
With the match extended under the new rules to allow completion
of a penalty corner at the end of a half, Tracy Finch added a
late third goal for Marlow.
Chalfont St Peter Ladies 1 Burnham 0 (abandoned after 50 mins)
This friendly fixture was abandoned after 50 minutes when a
Burnham player took a painful knock on the ankle and had to be
stretchered off.
The game had begun at a quick pace and Chalfont took the lead
after 7 minutes when Judi Burrows deflected in Clair McCoy's free
hit from just outside the circle. Chalfont produced some fine
passing movements, one of which saw Heidi Jones set up Sarah
Ottaway who shot wide from just inside the circle.
Chalfont soaked up a bit of pressure towards the end of the half
but defended resolutely. The limited action in the second half
saw some quick thinking from Burrows which put Jo Peters into the
circle but she shot just wide.

Sonning 0 Chalfont St. Peter Ladies 0
Two missed penalty strokes by Chalfont and the personal tussle
between sisters Clair McCoy (Chalfont) and Anji Higgins (Sonning)
added a bit of spice to this goalless draw in the Trysports
League.
In a very competitive first half in which Higgins was very
prominent for Sonning, prompting most of their good moves which
pulled them into the game, Judi Burrows fine strike from a
penalty corner produced an excellent save from Sonning's
goalkeeper. Mo Burnley i turn made two good saves to keep
the score level along with some good defending by Angela Scott
and Elaine Hunter.
After 22 minutes, a melee in Sonning's goalmouth, when three
Chalfont players were denied (Burrows, Sarah Ottaway, Catherine
Watson), brought the penalty stroke awarded for a foot on the
line. Sonning's 'keeper saved.
The second half saw Chalfont up the tempo and maintain constant
pressure throughout the half with Watson behind a number of
attacking moves. With six minutes to go Watson's dribbling
run into the circle ended with an illegal stroke. Burrows
just had time to bring another save out of Sonning's 'keeper with
a cleanly hit reverse stick shot from the top of the circle.
Chalfont St Peter Ladies 0 Headington 1
Chalfont finally lost their unbeaten start to the season in a
close fought Trysports League tussle with Headington when a goal
by Jackie Bennett 6 minutes from time proved decisive.
Chalfont started strongly and put together some good moves
without creating any clear openings. Headington came back
into the game but some good defending by Alison Spicer and Jacqui
Smith kept them at bay.
The second-half started with Chalfont again on the offensive and
Pippa Brettle shot narrowly wide. With an evenly contested
battle in midfield in which Jo Peters shone for Chalfont, Elaine
Hunter was denied a goal following a fine run by Sarah Ottaway.
The game looked to be heading for a goalless draw until
Headington capitalised on a penalty corner.

League match at Wokingham. Wokingham started and forced
Chalfont back for the first quarter of the match with Mo Burnley
producing one fine save.

of play from their first penalty corner when some superb play by
Sarah Ottaway set up Pippa Brettle to score. Wokingham
equalised 11 minutes later when some good play on the left wing
allowed Cindy Kirkland to score at the near post.
Chalfont got stronger during the second half and created numerous
chances with Brettle, Kerry Kalcher and Elaine Hunter producing
saves from Wokingham's goalkeeper. However, the winning
goal just eluded them.

with a solid performance. Chess Valley took the lead after

the circle after a sluggish start by Chalfont. Five minutes

Peters with Pippa Brettle's strike. Both sides had good
chances in the remainder of the first half with Katie McCoy
producing one good save. One goalmouth melee, involving
attempts by Brettle, Judi Burrows and Kerry Kalcher just resulted
in a penalty corner following good saves by Chess Valley's
goalie.
The second half began with a succession of penalty corners which
Chalfont were unable to convert. Then Chess Valley pressed
forward and had a run of numerous penalty-corners which produced
a couple of fine saves by McCoy and two superb interceptions by
Clair McCoy. Chalfont defended well and in numbers and
nearly scored a winner when a fine run by Judi Burrows ended with

Two goals each by Catherine Watson and Pippa Brettle helped
Chalfont to a well deserved victory in a friendly match at
Newland Park.
Taking advantage of a deflected cross, Watson fired Chalfont into
a tenth minute lead. Despite considerable pressure,
Chalfont had to wait for hteir second goal until the second
minute of the second half when Erika Schelshorn, making her
debut, slipped the ball to Pippa Brettle.
Eight minutes later an exquisite move culminated in a precisio
pass from Judi Burrows and a rasping first time shot by Brettle
for Chalfont's third.
With Chalfont's forward exploiting gaps in the Amersham defence,

Reading 2a 1 Chalfont St Peter 4
Chalfont St Peter Ladies produced another convincing
performance in their second Trysports League game of the
season. Starting brightly with some flowing hockey Chalfont
pressed forward and took the lead after 16 minutes. A free
hit by Jo Peters just outside Reading's circle landed on a
defender's foot. as the majority of players hesitated,
Heidi Jones pounced to score.
Four minutes later Catherine Watson made it 2-0 when she struck
home from 10 yards after receiving Pippa Brettle's square pass
from the left. Chalfont's continued pressure paid off in
the last minute of the first half when Brettle scored from a
well-worked penalty corner routine.
Two minutes into the second half Chalfont ensured the game was
out of Reading's reach when Kerry Kalcher set up Jones for her
second. Kalcher later scored only for an off-the ball
infringement to be adjudged and the goal disallowed.
Reading got stronger as the half went on but a superb defensive
display, well marshaled by Jacqui Smith, and a fine save by Mo
Burnley kept them at bay until the last minute when they scored a

Maidenhead 0 - Chalfont St Peter Ladies 3

game of the season with some fine flowing hockey epitomised by
the first goal after 8 minutes. Catherine Watson, on the
right wing, passed the ball inside to Annie Brothwell who chipped
it on to Judi Burrows who moved into the circle before striking
the ball home. Brothwell was then twice denied by the home
goalkeeper and shot narrowly wide from a penalty corner.
Chalfont's second goal came 8 minutes into the second half.
Heidi Jones was both the instigator and finisher. Her long
and splendidly accurate pass found Brothwell whose shot was saved
but Jones with lengthy elegant stride was the first to the
rebound.
Chalfont's third came in the last minute when Brothwell broke
into the circle and shot home. Sarah Birger was outstanding
in defence intercepting most of Maidenhead's threats. Burrows was
always great outlet for Chalfont finding space and holding the
front line waiting for support.
