We batted first on a difficult pitch and made 174 all out in 52 overs. In reply, Fleet threatened to overhaul our total at various times, but we kept taking wickets and remained on top. However, we were unable to bowl them out as they finished on 133-8 from 48 overs. Zamir Khan rediscovered his best form with the ball, taking 6-45 with his off breaks. So, we have finished 9th out of 10 in the league table and may or may not be relegated to Division 3 next season, we are currently waiting for the TVCL to resolve all its issues regarding relegation from the premier/feeder leagues and making up an extra team in Division 1. Watch this space!

Knowing that 14 points from the game would be sufficient to avoid the drop, we elected to bat first and batted excellently to score 280 for 7 before declaring after 50 overs.

The mainstay of the innings was débutante Mohammed Abraz who scored a classy 139 with some timing of the ball. Abraz was well supported by Kevin Braithwaite (27) and Simon Seabrook (24) who helped him add 116 and 87 respectively for the first two wickets. Upon Abraz's departure, James Mallinder entered the fray to hit a quick fire 37 before Asif Raza (14no) finished things off with a few lusty blows.

On a fast scoring outfield, Jason Page's fiery opening spell accounted for both Farnham's top two - the first to a fine catch by Matt Woods. Ravi Mangat (4-63) then came on and despite runs flowing fairly freely for the home side; wickets fell at fairly regular intervals. Mallinder took a blinding one-handed catch in the slips as well as a skier to remove Farnham's top scorer.

Just when the host's lower order started to show some resistance, Page returned to take two wickets in two balls and eventually finished with 4 for 39. Tony Hewston took the final wicket with the aid of Seabrook's third catch behind the stumps and celebrations were had by all.

Having achieved all and more than they expected, the batting order was reversed, allowing Nick 'The Wall' Davenport to bat for runs instead of a draw. Chalfont made slow progress on an extremely bouncy and variable pitch, but runs from Dean Page and Andy Amor, plus massive sixes from Dave Andersen and Matt Woods, meant that Chalfont finished at tea on 184-9 with the skipper not having to bat for only the second time this season!

Kingshill are always a good batting team, and this was no exception this year. Hard toil by Dean Page accounted for four wickets, and Matt Woods, with a low bouncing warm up ball removed one of their most dangerous batsmen. With overs running out, Chalfont made crucial breakthroughs from Webb and Collins, but with two overs left and just two runs to score, Kingshill lobbed the ball over the field and ran a hard two for victory.

Dropped catches were the order of the day, and the 2XI were left rueing what might have been.

TRIPPING OVER THE LACE GAUNTLET!

OK, so we have had a mixed cricket season. There have been highs and there have been lows (and that's not just my batting average)! However one of the best games this season was the Cricket vs. Hockey cricket match. A game that was played in the right spirit (tequila)! The cricket team managed to nudge the victory at the post but it was a close run contest. Wanting to get their own back, the hockey section have limply dropped the gauntlet in front of us to replay them at hockey. This has been snatched up by a manly grasp and accepted by yours truly. All I need now is some help, (yes, believe it or not I can't take them on all by myself)!

The game will be a 8:30pm start at Newlands Park on Friday 12th September. All you need is a pair of trainers and a white shirt, (a cricket one will do). I'm sure that we will be having a few drinks after and maybe even a few nibbles. It will be a great way to round off the season. Even if you don't want to play, please come down and cheer us on, we might need it, although you never know when an upset can occur! Please email me on tony_hewston@hotmail.com or call me on 07775 755244 if you are interested.
