The
Saturday 1st XI suffered a
narrow defeat in an away match
against Beaconsfield II. We
batted first and declared on
258-5 from 48 overs, with most
of the top order making a
contribution, namely Andy
Parsons (35), Shahid Din (65),
Gavin Mander (33) and Zamir Khan
(73 not out). Beaconsfield
started its reply strongly and
reached 166-1 in 28 overs. A
middle order collapse gave us
some hope, but a number of
crucial catching and run out
chances were not taken, and
Beaconsfield eventually reached
259-7 in 51.4 overs, defeat by
three wickets. With only one
team now to go down, the team
needs to score at least six
points in their final league
game this Saturday to avoid
relegation.

The
Saturday 2nd XI was denied
victory on Saturday after
pulling themselves around and
getting into a great position to
win against Marlow Park at home.
Asked to bat first, Marlow lost
an early wicket to Asif Raza
(3-62) the pick of the home
bowlers before Ashton and Bruce
showed aggression with several
big hits and pushed the run rate
up to 5-an-over. The
introduction of Ravi Mangat
(2-38) accounted for these two
batsmen as they were both caught
off skiers - the second one by
Matt Woods on the long-on
boundary. We gradually clawed
the run rate back but Marlow's
lower order rode their luck to
help them finish on a very
challenging 219 for 8 off 52
overs.
Our reply was soon faltering on
10 for 3 but Simon Gooch and
Tony Hewston (28) showed
positive intent and helped get
the score up to 87 before the
latter was out in the 24th over
just prior to drinks. Gooch was
joined by David Peters (46) and
they proceeded to add 114 in 21
overs and give CSP the
initiative with just 4 overs to
go and 20 runs required. The
final twist to the game came
when firstly Peters was given
out LBW somewhat harshly by the
visiting umpire. At the end of
the same over, the same umpire
then questioned the score saying
that it had been one run out 4
overs previously! Having proven
that the scorer was correct the
game recommenced but
unfortunately the concentration
of the batsmen had been affected
and both Raza and then Gooch
fell in the next over. Gooch had
batted superbly for 105 - his
maiden century.
In the end, having come so close
we finished disappointingly on
209 for 8 in a game that if we
had won we would have
leapfrogged Marlow Park in the
table and almost guaranteed our
safety. As it is we now go into
next week's final match 11
points ahead of second-bottom
Kidmore End and 6 points behind
Marlow Park with the bottom 2
clubs likely to be relegated.

The
Sunday 1st XI played a friendly
match against Rutland Exiles at
Chalfont Park. Starting a 40
over match late, we were in a
spot of bother at 107-5 after 21
overs, despite 48 from Zamir
Khan. However Tony Hewston and
Shahid Din rebuilt the innings,
with the latter making a superb
102 not out. There was some
rather friendly bowling on
offer, but it was dispatched
with a combination of elegance,
timing and brute strength.
Skipper Rahul Punj generously
decided to take mercy on the
opposition after 36 overs and
declared. Rutland made a decent
fist of its reply, keeping in
touch with the required run rate
for a while, but a fine all
round performance in the field
from Mike Burge helped swing the
match our way. The London
Express clean bowled the opening
batsman and then took two
excellent catches in the deep.
Zamir Khan snaffled a few
rabbits late on, 4-12, and we
ran out comfortable winners by
81 runs.

The
omnipotent Sunday 2nd XI made
the short jaunt to local rivals
Tring this weekend in the yearly
grudge match. With no less than
FIVE changes from the team that
beat the British Library last
week, it looked like we would
lack the bowling and batting to
see off a Tring side which we
only narrowly beat at home
earlier in the year. With Steve
Baker injured playing football
in the morning, and Dean and
Jason Page playing for the 1st
XI, Gareth Noot opened the
bowling, before succumbing to a
bad back after just four overs.
With Webb at one end bowling
slow buffet fodder, it was Andy
Amor who took up the gaunlet at
the other end. Amor bowled 17
straight overs and took the
first seven wickets of the
match, finishing with figures of
7-53, and was extremely glad he
had taken a day's holiday to
play! Chris Yoxall Jnr replaced
Dave Andersen (8-0-30-0) and had
immediate effect, having their
number 3 caught by Webb at Long
On from his first ball! Yoxall
ended up with 2-6 from his two
overs, and a runout finished off
Tring on a modest 160 all out.
The untested opening partnership
of Yoxall Jnr and usual number
10 batsman Pat Nagle put on a
stand of 46 for the first wicket
before Yoxall was trapped lbw
for 19. Then the most curious
runout of all time. Pat Nagle
ran two from a no-ball
(signalled at square leg by Dave
Andersen), and the bails were
whipped off by the wicket keeper
who appealed. Seeing Dave's hand
extended, Pat thought he had
been adjudged out unfairly and
made the walk back to the
pavillion! We've put him down as
'retired' instead of 'run out'!
Amor's luck could not continue
as he was out for only 5, but
Gareth Noot stayed at the crease
until the end, seeing off the
partnerships of White (18),
Andersen (6) and Nolder (0) and
ending unbeaten on 55. As if to
compound the comedy of the day,
Webb hit the winning runs which
ensured ten wins this season and
also ensured that his hair was
shaved to a grade three and his
beard removed as well. It's
cold.
So the 2nd XI march on to their
next meeting with fate, the
skipper thankful they cannot win
15 games this season as God only
knows what would end up being
shaved off then!

Former
Sunday 2XI skipper Andy Amor
gave up the lead role at the end
of last season in order to join
the police force. Yes indeed,
the Sunday 2XI now claims two
policemen in its ranks, and the
amount of opposition players
unaccountably being arrested the
day before a game has taken an
upward turn.
When not patrolling the mean
streets of Maidenhead (in search
of places where he can get free
kebabs), Andy is a very useful
batsman and bowler - although
his bowling is currently
described as 'rubbish' by
himself. Unfortunately for the
club, Andy works every other
weekend, so it is a rare
occurance that he manages to
un-handcuff himself from his
latest girlfriend and get down
to the club in time for the
match.
He learnt to play cricket under
the auspicious eye of one Daniel
Webb Esq, from the age of about
five, with a cricket bat that
was far too big for him and pads
that were last used before the
war. The Boer War. Having no-one
to practice against in his
search for perfection has never
put Andy off; he has even been
known to make his girlfriend don
the pads and stand in the nets
so he can practice his bowling -
an innocent comment which
resulted in so much fnar-fnar
schoolboy sniggering and jokes
about 'middle stump' that we
never saw her again at the
ground!
Often the cry of the
lesser-spotted-Amor is heard on
the pitch, usually spouting some
inane comment that no-one has
ever heard of, the legendary one
being 'tiny salmon', and to this
day the 2XI still have no idea
what he is talking about.
Andy also has the dubious honour
of being skipper in the now
infamous 'Mike Todd Match'. If
you don't know the story, ask
anyone in the 2XI - and be
prepared to sit down and cry
with laughter.

TRIPPING OVER THE LACE GAUNTLET!
OK, so we have had a mixed
cricket season. There have been
highs and there have been lows
(and that's not just my batting
average)! However one of the
best games this season was the
Cricket vs. Hockey cricket
match. A game that was played in
the right spirit (tequila)! The
cricket team managed to nudge
the victory at the post but it
was a close run contest. Wanting
to get their own back, the
hockey section have limply
dropped the gauntlet in front of
us to replay them at hockey.
This has been snatched up by a
manly grasp and accepted by
yours truly. All I need now is
some help, (yes, believe it or
not I can't take them on all by
myself)!
The game will be a 8:30pm start
at Newlands Park on Friday 12th
September. All you need is a
pair of trainers and a white
shirt, (a cricket one will do).
I'm sure that we will be having
a few drinks after and maybe
even a few nibbles. It will be a
great way to round off the
season. Even if you don't want
to play, please come down and
cheer us on, we might need it,
although you never know when an
upset can occur! Please email me
on tony_hewston@hotmail.com or
call me on 07775 755244 if you
are interested.
