CHALFONT ST. PETER CRICKET CLUB NEWSLETTER
ISSUE 18 - 28 AUGUST 2003
===================================================
===================================================
============ REPORT - SATURDAY 1ST XI ===========
===================================================
The Saturday 1st XI were unable to force a much needed win in an away match
against Tring Park II.
We batted first and scored 254-2 in 52 overs, with Zamir Khan making 73 not
out and Gavin Mander 71 not out. However, Tring batted very well in reply
and nearly overhauled our score, finishing on 241-4 in
48 overs. Match drawn, and we are 22 points adrift of eighth place and
safety from relegation, with only two matches left. However, the three teams
directly above us are all within reach, if we can manage to win our last two
matches, so all is not yet lost!
===================================================
============ REPORT - SATURDAY 2ND XI ===========
===================================================
The Saturday 2nd XI played a home match against Windsor II. Windsor batted
first and made 188 all out in 51.1 overs. We took four early wickets, but
then rather let the opposition off the hook, with a few dropped chances
along the way. In reply, Tony Hewston and Kevin Braithwaite both scored a
few runs, but a middle order collapse left us reeling.
David Peters and Tim Graver partially repaired the innings, but it was not
to be, 166 all out in 46.3 overs and defeat by 22 runs. So, we are placed
eighth out of ten with two matches to go. Two clubs will definitely be
relegated, but a third or fourth team might be demoted too, dependent on
results in the Home Counties Premier League, so all is still to play for!
===================================================
============ REPORT - SUNDAY 2ND XI =============
===================================================
The Sunday 2nd XI made the long journey to play The British Library with a
hastily pulled together team after two late dropouts, and made a late
arrival after a flat battery in the car park. With the Library winning the
toss and electing to bat on a track that looked like concrete, but proved to
have variable bounce, the opening bowling of Jason and Dean page soon took
its toll. A fine one-handed slip catch by Dan Webb removed the dangerous
opener from Jason Page's bowling, and soon the Library were reeling at 80-4
and looked it looked like we would soon bowl them out when they reached
100-5. However, late lusty blows by their lower order ensured that they
declared on a reasonable 171-6, with Jason taking three wickets in his 15
over spell, and Gareth Noot taking two with Dean Page the other (that's
right, we only used three bowlers!).
The unusual opening partnership of Andy Amor and Pat Nagle started steadily,
but Amor was out early, edging an attempted pull shot, and Dean Page
followed him soon after. Making a cameo appearance for the team was Bruce
Page - suffering from Nigerian Flu - who rolled back the years to score 29,
including a massive straight six. A quick 12 from Dave Andersen also saw Pat
'Dead Bat' Nagle reach his first ever fifty for the club in typical fashion
with a massive swipe for four runs, sparking massive cheering from the
boundary. Out a few balls later, Martin White and Gareth Noot saw the game
won in style, with Noot running hard between the sticks (about halfway down
the track when the ball was
bowled) and Whitey scoring the winning run with just
5 balls left, playing a pull shot that dropped between two fielders!
9 wins - one more and off comes the hair and the beard!
===================================================
========== PROFILE - MARTIN WHITE SNR ===========
===================================================
Ah, yes, the sound of merriment ensues from the clubhouse, laughter is
heard...and then, from nowhere...the sound of a guitar.
"I only know three chords," Whitey begins, "and I've forgotten two of them."
Yes indeed ladies and gentlemen, the legend that is Martin White Snr.
Whitey. Chalky. Many other names have graced this left handed batsman and
wicket-keeper, but none so apt as 'One Man Band'.
He's one man. And he should be banned. Such are the stories surrounding
Martin or involving him, I could not possibly hope to do justice to all of
them in this small section, suffice to say that when he retires to Spain in
the not-too-distant future, the club will truly have lost one of its most
memorable characters.
Who could not have heard the stories about his shop and his amazing customer
relationship skills that would make Basil Fawlty cringe? Marvel at the witty
banter he has with the opposition 'P*** off ****'.
Be stunned by his impersonations of Boycott...for the 27th time...this year.
I have no idea when Martin started playing for the club, and neither does
he. Though he does insist it was 'when God was a boy'. I would like to give
you some stats on Martins career at Chalfont, but I do not have any, so I
will make them up: Runs - lots.
Catches - lots.
Often to be found behind the stumps when fielding ("There's less running
about here") or batting in the top middle order giving the umpire a
withering stare ("That was miles down leg, where was the wide signal?!").
The story about Whitey that we always remember most though, is the time that
he was out LBW, and he came off moaning that "That's somebody's weekend
you've ruined". Ever since then, when the opposition appeals for LBW and
Martin is umpiring, a raucous laughter can be heard from the rest of the
team on the sideline - knowing full well that he wouldn't want to ruin
somone's weekend!
¡adiós Martin, goza del sol en España!
