The
Saturday 1st XI went down to
another heavy defeat, this time
against league champions elect
High Wycombe II, at Chalfont
Park. High Wycombe won the toss
and elected to bat, and made
245-6 declared from 50 overs.
Saqib Ahmed, who has been a
little unlucky in recent weeks,
took a well deserved three
wickets this time. In reply, we
were never really in the hunt,
and subsided to 102 all out in
31 overs. Gavin Mander was the
only batsman to make an impact,
top scoring with 36, timing the
ball considerably better than
his arrival for the start of the
match! So, defeat by 143 runs
and, with other results going
against us, we are now staring
relegation in the face.

The
Saturday 2nd XI played an away
match against all-conquering
top-of-the-table Eversley 1st XI
and nearly held out for a very
creditable draw. Asked to bat
first, Eversley made their
intentions clear as A.O'Kelly
their captain scored a quickfire
35 before being bowled by Asif
Raza in the 6th over. This set
the tone for the innings and
although the bowlers stuck
manfully to their task the hard
fast track and quick outfield
allowed the home team to declare
on 298 for 5 after 41 overs.
Our openers knew that they would
be greated by a fiery opening
spell by Eversley's South
African Luis Piso who has been
knocking back all and sundry
this season! Great patience was
shown by Mudo Ahmed who batted
over an hour-and-a-half for his
19 and Kevin Braithwaite and
Simon Gooch. Despite this we
still found ourselves 66 for 4
when Martin Cartledge (38)
joined Tony Hewston (26) and
these two livened up proceedings
as they added 48 with some clean
hitting and good strokeplay. A
further fall of wickets left us
at 138 for 8 with 25 overs to go
and still a long way off
achieving maximum batting points
if we reached 200. The 9th
wicket pair of Tim Graver (29
not out) and Ravi Mangat (18)
batted superbly in the
situation. Being very watchful
and only playing at what they
needed to as they eased the
score first pass 150 and then
175 as the fielders started to
crowd around the bat more and
more. As these two took the game
into the last 10 overs you could
feel the tension in the home
team as they faced possibly not
winning their first match of the
season! Mangat finally succumbed
with the score on 186. Tom
Richardson strode to the wicket
and successfully negotiated an
over from Piso which allowed
Graver to ensure maximum batting
points were obtained. Eversley
finally won with just 4.3 overs
left and Extras having top
scored with 41!

The
Sunday 1st XI played an away
match against Windsor in the
MASL. We won the toss and batted
first on a dry, crumbling
wicket. Matthew Stevenson (27)
and Safi Ahmed (31) put on sixty
for the first wicket, but both
they and the middle order were
then blown away by a fine spell
from Windsor's Griffith, 5-18
from his 8 overs. Zamir Khan
came to the rescue with 51 not
out, but we still finished on a
disappointing 147 all out on
36.2 overs. As we clapped yet
another fifty from Zeddy, Saqib
Ahmed made the memorable
comment, "blimey, he's scored
more fifties this season than
I've taken wickets!" A quick
check of the records shows that,
fortunately for Saqib, this is
not quite true: Zeddy has scored
13 fifties this season,
including one century (and 1177
runs in total), and Saqib has 19
wickets. Anyway, Windsor always
looked likely winners, despite
useful bowling spells from Rhys
Mander, 2-22 from his 8 overs,
and Rahul Punj, 0-29 from his
eight and unlucky not to get a
wicket, and they duly reached
150-5 in 32.3 overs, defeat by 5
wickets.

By
the narrowest of margins,
Chalfont won the toss and
elected to bat on a warm
summer's day. Opening pair Steve
Baker (26) and Alex Hales (43)
put on the 2XIs largest opening
partnership of the summer, and
Neal Collins once again weighed
in with a quick 54 before he was
run out. Dean Page (25) and Dave
Andersen (22) hurried the score
along, but after that wickets
fell cheaply with just Kriss
Collins (12) and Pat Nagle (6)
not out as we came in for tea at
216-9.
With a good batting line-up,
Prestcold set about the bowling
in typical style, but Chalfont
soon pegged them back with the
bowling of Dean Page (1-38) and
Alex Hales (1-35). However, it
was to be Steve Baker's day as
he ran through the opposition in
his nine over spell, taking
4-15. Gareth Noot at the other
end also proved useful, taking
2-22 from his seven overs.
However, with time and overs
running out, and Prestcold on
101-8, they would not be forced
in to throwing their wickets
away, and the match ended a draw
with Prestcold on 113-8.
The Sunday 2XIs last home game
of the season, now four away
matches await us to see if we
can improve on eight wins so
far!

Martin
has only joined the cricket
section at CPSA this year
although has been a Trojan of
the hockey section for many
years now. His face is always
down the club, more often than
not behind a pint glass and a
lot of slurred rambling!
Martin, the newest father in the
club has dedication to the end.
Otty (his wife) expecting their
first child and a week and a
half overdue thought he would be
considerate on the Saturday and
tell her that he would only play
at home so that he could meet
her at the hospital after the
game should she go in to labour!
His cricketing skills were honed
at West Wycombe and more
recently with the elite Chalfont
Tavs who are based out of the
White Heart in St Giles. Finally
succumbing to the temptation of
playing cricket at a semi
serious level and testing what
he has learnt he started his CSP
CC career opening the bowling
for the 1st IX, although a
recent injury has meant a spell
in the 2nd's.
His performance with the bat is
a local legend. Modelling
himself on Freddy Flintoff but
actually achieving something
like Giles Payne his stomach is
a growing concern! He has a keen
eye and a lusty blow. Never one
to bore the crowds he has sent
many a ball sailing over the
boundary never to be seen again!
The last few innings have been a
little bit of a disappointment.
Martin having 3 innings in the
last three weeks has not yet
managed to put bat on ball.
Martin is an opinionated kinda
guy who sees things as right and
wrong. Him being right and
everyone else being wrong! He
likes to win and has been known
to try and start fights when
losing at Monopoly. He has so
many famous cock ups it would be
impossible to list them all
here. However if you see him
around feel free to ask about
Penne Pasta, Batistuta the
Italian footballer who name ends
in O, Drugs that don't work,
Spit Roasting Warren or West
Hams chances of getting back to
the Premiership.
