The
Saturday 1st XI lost its vital
TVL Division 2B relegation
dogfight match away against
Chenies & Latimer. Chenies won
the toss and batted first on an
unbelievably hot afternoon.
Saqib Ahmed put in a fine
opening spell and was unlucky
not to take a wicket as Chenies
reached 103 without loss. But
the introduction of Rhys Mander,
5-43 from 10 overs, including an
excellent caught and bowled,
brought us back into the match.
And Jason Page deserves a
mention for two excellent
catches in the deep. Overall, we
were happy to keep Chenies to
224-9 in 52 overs and were
confident of winning when we
started our reply. But a very
poor batting display saw us
dismissed for 145 in 44.4 overs.
Chenies bowled very well, but it
was a very disappointing effort,
with only skipper Zamir Khan,
who made 50, making a notable
contribution. Defeat by 79 runs.

The
Saturday 2nd XI won its crucial
relegation battle at home to
Kidmore End. Kidmore won the
toss and decided to subject the
home team to bowling in the
blistering heat. Zahid Aslam
picked up an early wicket and
Martin Cartledge bowled 10 overs
tirelessly in the sapping
conditions and took 2 for 18.
Kidmore's 4th wicket pair dug in
and got the score past 90 but
the introduction of Giles Payne
(2-30) led to the demise of both
these batsmen. Faheem Ijaz
(4-16) then managed to clean up
the lower order with an
impressive spell and Kidmore
were finally all out for 156 in
the 45th over.
Our reply got off to the worst
possible start as we found
ourselves 7 for 3 off just the
first 10 balls of the innings!
Kevin Braithwaite (40) and Tony
Hewston (58) then both batted
extremely well in their
contrasting manners as they
added 94 runs for the 4th wicket
and slowly eased us back into
control of the game. Both were
then dismissed in a short space
of time but F.Ijaz (31) and
Payne (19) produced an unbroken
partnership and ensured the
innings suffered no further
hiccups as we reached 159 for 5
in the 37th over.

The
Saturday 3rd XI was in action
again this week, with a local
match against Headstone St
George. On winning the toss, we
unsuprisingly elected to bat,
and were soon in trouble with
Kriss Collins and Dan Webb out
cheaply. However, the mighty
frame of Dave Andersen soon
arrived at the crease and scored
a quick sixty, ably assisted by
John Woods who made 30 -
including a massive six that
damaged the tiles on houses past
the long boundary. It was also
Dave Nolder's day, as he posted
his highest ever cricket score
of 32, all in fours. In the end
we were hanging on, trying to
keep the hosts busy fielding
until 4.45, and almost managed
it. A respectable 176 all out
was posted and looked to be
defendable.
Headstone however, had other
ideas. In the oppressive heat,
Malcolm Upton hit the stumps in
his first over, but incredibly
the bail refused to fall off!
Jon Lindsay (13-2-51-1) made the
early breakthrough, but dropped
catches all round made it hard
work to make any headway. Dave
Andersen bowled well again to
slow the run-rate and took a
couple of wickets, but in the
end it was not to be our day, as
the hosts racked up 177-5 with
five overs to spare.

The
Sunday 1st XI played its Skinner
Cup Quarter Final match against
Chesham at Chalfont Park, once
again in exceptionally hot
weather. We batted first and
made 172-8 in our 45 overs, with
the notable contributions coming
from Amit Puri (61) and Saqib
Ahmed (41 not out). In reply,
Chesham looked to be coasting to
victory at 71-0 from 11 overs,
but it was once again the
introduction of Rhys Mander
(2-28 from his 9 overs) which
swung the match back our way.
For the second day running,
Jason Page put in a great
fielding display, taking one
superb running catch at deep
midwicket, and skipper Zamir
Khan (3-33 from 9 overs) and
Amit Puri (4-32 from 9 overs)
continued the spin attack to
great effect, as Chesham
collapsed to 144-9. At this
point we were hot favourites,
but Chesham's last wicket pair
played very well and saw them
home to victory. A great cricket
match, but defeat by 1 wicket!

Welcome
to Dunstable. Bandit Country.
Yes, once again the opposition
cried off, refusing to face the
mighty Sunday 2XI, and Dunstable
3XI again offered us a game at
their place. After losing the
toss and unsuprisingly being
told to bowl first, the
Dunstable opening partnership of
Wale and Searle made steady
progress. Unsurprisingly, these
players usually play for the
2XI, but had been dropped
because they had been on holiday
for the past two weeks. A
comment was offered that they
should have been wearing
sombreros instead of helmets,
and using pistolas instead of
bats as they proceeded to rob us
of runs! Wale was taken care of
via Chris Yoxall's bowling, with
a fine catch at second slip by
Dave Andersen, but this only
made way for another Wale to
come in! Eventually, it was Mike
Burge (10-1-38-3) and Dan Webb
(6-1-21-3) who rid the
opposition of their top order
batsmen, and Dave Andersen once
again weighed in with wickets
(4-1-7-2) to help see the
opposition declare at 180-9. A
fine fielding display all round,
including a stunning running
catch by Tim Graver, with Webb
taking 3 catches and having to
buy yet another jug.
With an achievable target set
for once, we started positively,
but swinging conditions and poor
visibility due to crops being
cut directly behind us(!) meant
that Steve Baker was dismissed
cheaply, and was soon followed
back to the pavilion by Clarke,
White and Graver. The only ray
of sunshine in this whole affair
was Pat Nagle, batting at number
two, seeing off their opening
bowlers by remaining at the
crease to face 67 deliveries but
score only 14! Dave Andersen
gave some hope as he launched
into the bowling in typical
fashion, scoring a quick 29, and
Mike Burge at the other end
scoring 20. In the end though,
it was down to Malcolm 'Forward
Defensive' Upton and Nick 'The
Wall' Davenport to block out for
the last 3 overs to ensure a
draw with us ending up on 165-8.
Top scorer was again that great
player Johnny Extras with a
staggering 52 - and he never
even bought a jug the tightwad.

David
"Potty" Peters is a club legend:
cricketer, hockey player, hockey
coach, finance director, cricket
chairman, 2nd XI captain, 3rd XI
captain, colts, fund raising,
teas. If there's anything about
the club that he doesn't know,
then it's not worth knowing.
He's Mr CPSA, really!
As Saturday 2nd XI captain, he
is a genius at getting eleven
players onto the field every
week. And this despite the best
attempts of sundry team members
to catch him out, by crying off
at the last minute, with the
worst possible excuses!
He is a crafty off spinner with
a good arm ball. Well, six of
them, actually! No, this is a
little unfair, he is a master of
flight and guile, of knowing
when to put himself on, where to
put the fielders, which accurate
seamer to put on at the other
end to tie the batsmen down.
Then he throws up a few tempters
and, low and behold, another
batsman succumbs! Nine of them
in one afternoon once!
His finest moment with the bat
came at Wooburn Narkovians, a
career best 89. He enjoyed it so
much that he then bought a house
overlooking the Wooburn ground!
In fact, this is probably his
lucky ground, as he also led the
2nd XI to a promotion clinching
victory at this venue last
season.
As a fielder, he has a very safe
pair of hands and can usually be
found at mid on, sporting his
David Gower sunhat, and shrewdly
concealing his throwing arm from
the opposition!
Vices: none that anyone's aware
of, really, but he did go to
watch a day's test cricket, on
his own, on his honeymoon in New
Zealand!
