The Saturday 1st XI had the rain gods to
thank as we escaped with a draw in an away match against
Falkland II. The match was played in persistent drizzle, but
this did not excuse a poor batting display as we struggled
to 140 all out in 49.3 overs. Gavin Mander was the mainstay
of our innings, making 57 not out. As the rain got heavier,
Falkland tried desperately to get the match won and raced to
53-1 from 11 overs. But, at this stage, conditions became
unplayable, and the umpires abandoned the match, giving us a
slightly fortunate draw!

The Saturday 2nd XI drew its game at home
to Teddington Town I when persistent rain finally forced the
players off the field with 18 overs left. Teddington won the
toss and decided to bowl. Despite the loss of an early
wicket, we batted well through a difficult opening period
thanks to Mudo Ahmed (43) and Kevin Braithwaite (61) and
reached 75 for 2 off 26 overs. The Teddington bowlers always
anaged to keep a tight rein on the home side's innings
despite some impetus given in the latter stages by Tony
Hewston (25) and Rob Machin (20). As our innings closed on
170 for 6 after 52 overs the rain started to fall and was
quite heavy at times during the tea interval although the
covers were put on for this period.
After a prolonged wait, the visitors
started their reply with positive intent although they
didn't have everything their own way. At 70 for 1 off 19
overs, David Peters (3 -21) came into the attack and enticed
three batsmen to get caught out by Sohail Ijaz at long-off.
This temporarily halted Teddington's progress which finally
succumbed to the weather.

The Saturday 3rd XI made the short trip
to play North Maidenhead IV on a miserable, rainy day. With
North Maidenhead batting first in the relative sunshine, it
was Chris Yoxall Snr making early breathroughs, taking 2-23
off his 10 overs, whilst Dean Page went for just 2 runs off
four overs and took one wicket. Chivalrous as ever, Dean
Page looked decidely dangerous on a bouncy pitch and was
removed from the bowling line up to save serious injury to
the opposition. Rav Managat took one wicket in his only
over, with Noot taking 2-43 off his eight. However, the
highlight of the day had to be Clint Fox's stunning 4-20 off
just 4 overs to see the opposition bowled out for 94.
Chalfont's reply started well, but only
Chris Yoxall Jnr (11) and Dave Andersen (19) made double
figures, as persistent rain made for difficult batting
conditions and a slow outfield made it difficult to get the
ball away. Pat Nagle managed a magnificent 6, after being
told to 'block out at your end'! In the end, Chalfont could
not hold out against opening bowler Adil, who took 5-14 in
his seven over spell and were all out for 84, a narrow
defeat by just 10 runs. As is usual for the 3s, a good time
was had by all, and we have preserved the fixture for next
year!

On a day when most games appeared to be
called off, the Sunday 2nd XI were pleased to get a game in
on Sunday, away to Chesham Bois II. With Chesham
unsuprisingly deciding to bat first after winning the toss,
Chalfont made an early breakthrough with a stunning one
handed catch inches off the floor by Dave Andersen from Dean
Page's bowling. Chris Yoxall Snr (2-28-8) removed the other
openers as Chalfont then toiled to remove two former first
team players who have just taken over the Sunday II team for
Bois. In the end it proved to be a fruitless task, with the
opposition skipper Ringsell making an unbeaten ton, and his
partner in crime Turnham retiring on 60. Chalfont were soon
back in to the swing of things once these two had departed,
with Dean Page taking two wickets in his final over (3-57)
to see Bois retire early with 231-5 from just 39 overs.
In response Chalfont started brightly,
but the detioriorating pitch and some short bowling took
care of Baker, and Yoxall was dismissed for just 12 after an
hour at the crease. Neal Collins (51) and Andy Amor (39)
took the fight to the opposition, with Amor continuously
swiping the ball from off his nose to the boundary. However,
it was to be Dean Page who was the biggest hero of the day,
hitting an unbeaten 72 (11 fours) in short order, including
12 in one over off the bowling of the opposition skipper,
who promptly finished his bowling spell. Ably assisted by
Dave Andersen ('play yourself in Dave' - result: six off the
first ball) who made 23, Chalfont were stunned to find
themselves on the brink of winning with 6 full overs
remaining. Dean Page pulled it off in typical style - with a
boundary - and Chalfont won, posting 235-7 from 39.2 overs.
7 wins this season - and the 2XI are still stunned that for
the second time this season they have chased 200 or more
runs and won!

President's Day was
washed out by the rain, which was very disappointing, but it
was nice to see a few old faces again at the club, albeit
not on the cricket field! The Sunday 1st XI was left without
a match when the opposition, Tiddington, cried off at
11.30am on the morning of the match.

Nick Davenport is a newcomer to Chalfont
St Peter CC, having been conned in to playing by Dan Webb,
who is manager of the football team he also plays in goal
for. Having lived in Chalfont for most of his life, he moved
to Milton Keynes last year and now commutes every Sunday to
play cricket - sometimes from as far afield as Derby!
A useful replacement wicketkeeper for the elder statesman
Martin White, it is his batting that has brought him to
prominence and fame amongst the Sunday 2XI. Along with Pat
Nagle and Chris Yoxall Snr, these three are the 'unholy
trinity' for bowlers to try and get out. When Davenport goes
in to bat, you should expect no fireworks or charging up the
wicket, but a more sedate left handed defensive batting
style that even Boycott would be hard pushed to argue with.
Never hitting out to try and improve his own averages, he is
a true team player in the defensive bastion position of
number 10.
Often his own worst critic, people often think Davenport has
Tourettes as he swears vehemently at himself for missed
catches or stumpings, or for playing a shot that could have
resulted in him being out.
Quick in the field, and with a decent throw, he is
notoriously camera shy with his quiffed, slicked-back hair.
He can often be spotted by the huge stash of cigarette ends
surrounding him, with a show of defiance to lung cancer that
would put the Marlboro Man to shame.
