Clean sweep! Well done to all four club
XIs this weekend, who achieved a clean sweep of victories!
"Stylish and very, very effective", Saqib
Ahmed was the hero as the Saturday 1st XI won a dramatic
match away at Fleet in TVL Division 2B. With eight wickets
down, two balls remaining, and still five runs needed for
victory, Saqib struck a superb six over midwicket to win the
match! Earlier, Fleet won the toss and batted first, making
215-4 from 52 overs. Overall, our fielding was poor, with
several catches going to ground, but we fought back well
after Fleet had reached 124-1 from 22 overs. In reply, we
lost two early wickets, but then Safi Ahmed came to the
crease to play a magnificent, match winning innings of 108.
He was well supported by Andy Parsons (25) and Zamir Khan
(54), and we seemed to be coasting to victory at one point,
192-4 from 44 overs, before a flurry of wickets swung the
match back towards Fleet, or at least a draw. However,
cometh the hour, cometh the man! 217-8 from 47.5 overs,
victory by 2 wickets.

A fine all round performance by Martin
Cartledge was the catalyst for inspiring Saturday 2nd XI to
its third league win of the season at home to Farnham Common
II. Electing field first, Cartledge led the bowling attack
throughout the innings and finishing with 4 for 81 off 26
overs. Good support was given by Tony Hewston (3-48) and
Asif Raza (2-51) as well as a couple of fine catches by Pat
Knight in the gully. Farnham were bowled out for 202 in 51.4
overs. Our reply was given a solid start by Martin L. White
(33) and James Mallinder (21) who put on 64 for the first
wicket before Knight hit a quick 19 to up the scoring rate.
At 110 for 4, Cartledge (58) was joined by David Peters (29)
and they proceeded to add 72 in 14 overs to swing the game
our way. With a few late wickets adding to the excitement it
was left to Mike Burge to hit the winning boundary in front
of a partisan crowd to see us home with 3 wickets and 3
overs to spare, 205-7 in 45 overs.

The Sunday 1st XI played an MASL match
away at Stoke Green, and ran out comfortable winners by six
wickets. Stoke Green won the toss and batted first, making
199-7 in 40 overs. Martin L. White was our most successful
bowler, with three wickets, including the opposition's best
player, superbly caught by Asif Ahmed at deepish mid on. In
reply, we lost a couple of early wickets, but a third wicket
stand of 122 between Matthew Stevenson (78) and Simon Gooch
(60) swung the match in our favour, and Zamir Khan and
Martin L. White then saw us home, 203-4 in 36.2 overs, with
the latter continuing the new club tradition of completing a
run chase with a six!

The unstoppable juggernaut that is the
Sunday 2nd XI rolled into town again to defeat a weakened
Chiswick & Latymer II at home. Winning the toss, Chalfont
players were amazed to hear that they would be batting
first, the only time the skipper has won the toss and
elected to bat this year. It soon looked like a bad move as
we struggled to find our form, with Chris Yoxall Jnr out for
just 4 and Steve Baker soon following with 12, trapped lbw.
Neal Collins remained at the wicket for an impressive 17
overs, but scored an unimpressive 17. When Collins was
trapped lbw he stormed off the pitch, threw his cricket bat
over the boundary and hit the clubhouse, moaned at the
groundsman for the low bounce which got him out (Neal -
don't swing across the line when the ball is on middle
stump), and generally threw his toys out of his pram, got in
his car and thundered off to his house to sulk. Upon
arriving at home, he was firmly reprimanded by his wife for
being such a baby.
Back at the club, we were in trouble at 47-5, but Dave
Andersen was making steady progress to his final score of 30
in an impressive display, and promptly hit a six in to the
Misbourne which resulted in a new ball having to be found.
At the other end, skipper Dan Webb set about the bowling in
his usual style ('hit it as hard as you can'). With Andersen
dismissed by a thin edge to the 'keeper, it was Nick 'The
Wall' Davenport who strode to the crease to make a 47
partnership with Webb (57no), but only managing to score 3
himself. Chalfont finished for tea at 176 all out, Webb
suicidally running out Chris Yoxall Snr on the last ball.
After a sumptious tea, in which Whitey had his specially
prepared crunchy peanut butter sandwiches, we took to the
field with opening bowlers Chris Yoxall (Senior - yes, I
know it gets confusing) and Steve Baker. Baker bowled
superbly for 11 overs, somehow failing to get any wickets
but conceding just 30 runs. Superb fielding displays by Dave
'You Shall Not Pass' Andersen and Martin 'I'm Not Moving
From Silly Mid Off Mate, Hit It At Me Again' White, kept the
oppositions score down.
However, the story of the day was of Chris Yoxall Snr, who,
in an unbroken 18 over spell, bowled 6 maidens and took 7
wickets for a miserly 50 runs. On an interesting note, one
of his wickets was caught by his son, Chris Yoxall Jnr, and
a run out by Yoxall Snr makes the book look like some sort
of schizophrenics diary. Only Rav Mangat managed to steal
any glory by taking a wicket in his three over spell
(3-0-14-1). Chiswick & Latymer bowled over for 115, and the
Sunday 2nd XI now have two players who have taken 7 wicket
hauls this season!

Pat Nagle has been a mainstay at Chalfont
since the early years with Saints. He was most often to be
found with Jerry Hall, either on the field or in one of the
local pubs. Always a happy-go-lucky face to have around, Pat
gets on with the job in hand without complaint, whatever it
is he is asked to do - be it opening the batting or bowling,
or even the umpiring.
Once a classy medium pacer who used to hold up one end for
twenty overs at a time, Pat is now more often to be found
languishing at square leg, where he often puts his body on
the line to stop a run. Often you can see where Pat is by
the cloud of smoke from one of his Dorchesters, which his
selflessly shares round the team when the rest of us have
run out. A brilliant defensive batsman, he has been
inspirational this year for the Sunday 2XI, often batting
for twenty overs, and not slashing out at anything that
might get him out in order to force the draw. This, of
course, has lead to his nickname of 'Dead Bat' Pat.
Stories of Mr Nagle abound within the club, but the one that
is most often remembered is of Pat at Tring in the summer of
2002. Having refused to walk for an alleged snick behind and
not been given, he was later bowled out. As he was walking
off the pitch the opposition captain was heard to remark "He
should have been out ages ago the cheat". To this, Pat
turned, and, with his bat extended towards the accused
player uttered the immortal lines "What did you say? You
called me cheat sir, and I resent it."
Occasionally Pat is "Oirish" when it suits him (ie, when
they are winning something), but most of the time he's just
Pat, who everyone seems to know in the village. Take a walk
down the High Street with him and it will take you fifteen
minutes whilst everybody stops to have a chat with him.
Defensive batsman extraordinaire. Occasional seam bowler.
Always umpire. Emmanuel Petit lookalike. 'Dead Bat' Pat
Nagle.

CRICKET v. HOCKEY. The club is
running a two off event. An evening of hilarious
competition. Want to know more? Then read on my friends. The
idea is simple. The hockey section put out a cricket team
and the cricket section put out a hockey team. The first in
these two extravaganza's starts on Friday the 18th July with
the cricket match, the return fixture to be confirmed.
The cricket will be a 20 over slog, with
each member of the team bowling no more than two overs, and
being retired on 25. There must be a minimum of one lady per
team and no one is to be too good. This will be followed and
indeed accompanied throughout with a few drinks on a summer
evening. Sound good? Sound a laugh?
So what do we need? YOU! That's it,
simple. If you are interested in playing for either section
please send me an email and tell me who you want to play
for. The teams are filling up fast and we only have a few
places left, with a couple of people still yet to be
confirmed. Watsy is the captain of the hockey team andy@chalfont-web-design.co.uk
and I am captain of the cricket team tony_hewston@hotmail.com
Please contact us if you want to play and, even if you don't
want to play, come down, give a cheer, and get trashed!
