The Saturday 1st XI held on for a draw in the first TVL Division 2B match of the season, at home against Reading II. Reading batted first and made 231-5 declared from 46 overs, a challenging declaration which left us 56 overs to get the runs. Shahid Din, with 2-60, and Zamir Khan, 3-94, were the pick of the bowlers. For most of our innings an unlikely win was on the cards, with Gavin Mander (49), Shahid Din (31) and Martin Cartledge (31) all in the runs, but in the end it was left to Rhys Mander and Mudo Ahmed to hold out for a draw on 203-9.

The Saturday 2nd XI had a similar game to the 1st XI, away to Old Merchant Taylors II. OMT batted first and made 183 all out in 52 overs. The pick of the bowlers was newcomer Asif Raza, who took six wickets, with Mike Burge, Martin L. White and David Peters sharing the others. In reply, we made 104-9. David Banner and Martin L. White got us off to a good start, with twenty runs apiece, before man of the match Asif Raza top scored with 35. However, it was left to the ever dependable Mike Burge and Asif Ahmed to survive the last ten overs for a draw.

The Sunday 1st XI suffered a narrow defeat in an away match against Harrow Town. Harrow batted first and made 205-8 in their 40 overs, with Zamir Khan the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-41. Mike Burge also put in a good spell, and deserved better figures than 1-53. In reply, a sparkling knock of 81 from Zamir Khan, and 31 from skipper Tony Hewston, put us in with a chance, but in the end we fell just short, 183-5 from our 40 overs, a defeat by 22 runs.

A depleted 10 man Sunday 2nd XI achieved an amazing victory over Old Owens on Sunday. With the opposition put in to bat as the home team were so under-strength, it also seemed a good idea as the opposition had only five players until 2.45, when the rest of their team turned up after having got lost. With no first choice bowlers, it was down to new boys Jonathan Lindsay and Rob Freeman to open. Lindsay made the first breakthrough removing the young opener for a duck. After that, it seemed Chalfont were on the back foot as Old Owens raced away after some shoddy bowling. A change of bowling saw Dave 'Dobber' Andersen (14-0-58-4) and Neal Collins (2.2-1-3-3) finish off the threat from Old Owens, but not before they had reached an impressive 162 all out.

Chalfonts batting started well with Dave Andersen (29) and Steve King (22) before they both succumbed to nagging line and length bowling that they could not get hold of. However, the real star for Chalfont was Neal Collins, whose unbeaten 77 guided the 2's to an unlikely victory. Special mention also to Pat Nagle, who tied up one end to allow Collins free reign at the slower bowling.

This weekend sees the start of the Thames Valley League season. The fixtures are as follows:

Saturday 1st XI:
Wokingham II, TVL2B, Away, 1.30pm start

Saturday 2nd XI:
NPL Lensbury II, TVL4B, Home, 1.30pm start

Sunday 1st XI:
BBC Radio News, Home, 2pm start

Sunday 2nd XI:
Prestcold, Away, 2pm start

Neal Collins gets this weeks "Performance of the Week" for his match winning knock of 77 not out for the Sunday 2XI.

Notable mentions go to Zeddy for his 81 for the Sunday 1XI and Asif Raza for his six wicket haul for the Saturday 2XI.

Don't forget that the Hockey Club AGM takes place this Friday (16th) at the club.

Tim Graver, known throughout the club as "Grubber", is an institution at Chalfont St. Peter C.C. A brilliant fielder in any position, a useful and improving lower middle order batsman and occasional, very occasional bowler, Tim almost always represents all the club XIs in any one season, turning out enthusiastically for whichever team he is selected.

Tim has a remarkable ability to injure himself, anytime, anywhere, and the list of his mishaps is legendary:

  • being knocked out by a beamer while batting at Abbots Langley, and leaving a pool of blood on the batting crease as he was carried off

  • running through wet concrete at Rickmansworth

  • dislocating a finger at Amersham Hill, and casually putting it back into place himself

  • crashing into the iron fencing rails at full speed at Teddington Town

  • ending up in a pile of stinging nettles after chasing a ball to the boundary in the pre picket fence days at Chalfont Park

Tim is a short price favourite to be the first person to injure himself on the new picket fence at Chalfont Park! A bit of a fitness fanatic, he can often be seen lapping the Chalfont Park ground in the winter, in preparation for the Three Peaks Challenge, or a similar endurance event. And now he has also taken up skiing, which opens up a whole new world of possible injuries!
