-------------------------------------------------------------
This day is called the feast at Flackwell.
He that bats this day, and comes safe home
not out,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is named,
And rouse him at the name of the Sunday
Twos.
He that shall bat this day, and see high
scores,
Will, yearly on the vigil, feast his
neighbours,
And say "To-morrow is Flackwell day."
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his
scars,
And say "These wounds I had on Flackwell
day."
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What stats he got that day. Then shall our
names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words -
Alex the Hales, Andersen and Thomas,
Webb and Nolder, Neave and Kassan -
Be in their flowing cups freshly remembered.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberéd -
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in Chalfont now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were
not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any
speaks
That fought with us upon Flackwell day.

A trip to Wokingham to
mark the halfway point of the season awaited
an in-form Chalfont team, nicely placed in
2nd position of Division 2B prior to the
game. There was certainly cause for optimism
with Wokingham II's struggling so far this
season languishing near the bottom.
However.....supporters of a nervous
disposition may need to turn away right now.
This is definitely a
'runs' ground with a flat, evenly paced
wicket, fast outfield, short boundary on one
side, not to mention a pretty steep slope to
the short side as well. If that's not a
recipe for a high scoring game I don't know
what is.
Yours truly arriving at
the ground short of runs, and unavailable
last week was subjected to a ridiculous wind
up by his so-called team mates that is just
simply too juvenile to explain. But just
remember this you amateur fun boys - revenge
is a dish best served cold.
Wokingham won the toss
and elected to bat first with honours being
shared for the first 20 overs (65 for 2).
Saqib Ahmed and Zed Khan the pick of the
bowlers keeping the top order in check.
Chalfont gained the ascendancy through the
middle of innings, taking wickets steadily
and after 35 overs Wokingham were starting
to struggle (135 for 6). Shahid Din bowling
with his usual excellent control (9 overs 1
for 19). Enter the Wokingham number 8 to
create carnage for 15 overs. The bloke
played well for his 90 (ninety), hitting
some big straight sixes (some not so
straight) and riding his luck at times. A
swift turn around in fortunes saw Wokingham
in for tea at 240 for 8. Saqib stuck to his
task well (17 overs 2 for 80), along with
Zed (16 overs 1 for 67).
Tea - decentish -
quantity excellent, quality fair to middle.
Chasing 240 at Wokingham
is not an unreasonable ask... except when
you are 18 for 6 (eighteen for six). The
remaining 223 seemed a long way off with two
thirds of the team in the hutch. The
Wokingham opening bowler certainly had his
day in the sun finishing with 8 wickets. He
did bowl some really good balls, all of
which seemed to take wickets, with a couple
of wickets donated for good measure. David
Banner restored respectability to the
innings with an excellent 50, ably supported
by Satish Sharma (23) and Fariq Ahmed (25).
A mid innings comment from Dave lightened
the mood when he stated that the last time
he and Satish had batted together in the
first 10 overs was 1985. Chalfont finally
succumbing to a heavy defeat (143 all out
from 33 overs).
Chalfont 5 points.
Wokingham 2XI 25 points.
