The Sunday 1st XI played
out a thrilling game at Kidmore End. We won
the toss and batted first, and made 240-7 in
our 40 overs, thanks mainly to Tahir Rashid
who made a superb 124. The only blot on his
copybook was running out three players,
including Saqib Ahmed who made a stylish 46.
In reply, Kidmore were soon struggling and
it looked odds on a Chalfont victory for
most of their innings, especially when they
needed over 100 off the last 14 overs with
only 5 wickets in hand. But good batting saw
them home to victory off the penultimate
ball - at nearly 8pm. We gave away some
silly runs in the field and dropped a couple
of catches, which proved expensive, but
overall it was a great game of Sunday
cricket, with a few drinks shared with the
opposition afterwards. It was almost like
the old days of Sunday cricket!

PARTY IN CHALFONT PARK
We are planning to stage
the biggest event ever for our sports club.
On August Bank Holiday Monday (29th) we are
looking to host a day of fun and
entertainment for the whole village, based
at our club sports ground.
Our aims are threefold:
- To offer the whole village a great day out
without having to brave Bank Holiday
traffic.
- To raise money for local charities.
- To promote the three sports we offer
(hockey, cricket and softball) whilst
raising money to further develop our club
for the good of the local community.
The charities will be
'Williams Fund' (named after a local boy,
William Dodd, who tragically died aged 4,
all monies raised go to research into
childhood cancers) and the Chalfont St Peter
Village Fund (led by the Chamber of
Commerce) for Christmas lights and summer
flower baskets. Both charities are working
with us.
The plan for the day is:
12 noon - a cricket match
to show local kids, who can join in, the
fantastic set-up we have.
2pm - children's entertainment: dancing,
games and face painting.
3pm - a chariot race which used to be a
village tradition. It is actually, I think,
an excuse to cobble together a
go-cart/pram/wheelie bin, dress up and drink
a lot, whilst racing around the ground!!!
4pm - Local bands performing
6pm - Main Band
9pm - Music
All due to finish at ten.
Along the way there will be side stalls and
a beer tent (obviously). More details to
follow.
This is clearly a huge
undertaking and we are now asking for help
in the following areas;
- Do you have potential
leads for sponsorship/advertising with local
or 'brand name'/businesses?
- Do you know a friendly printer who might
be up for a few flyers/ posters?
- Do you have any leads into the media,
press or radio?
- Would you, or your company, like to donate
a raffle prize?
If you can help at all
with any of the above please email me on
andreajobandrea@aol.com (cool email address
I know) or call Caroline Chipperfield 01753
885554/07887 675310
Please support our club
in what should be a fantastic event - and
put the 29th August in your diary.

This week, the Saturday
2's travelled to salubrious Slough for their
fixture. After last weeks 25 pointer, they
had moved to 3rd in the division and were
hoping to cement their place.
Now I'm not saying that
Slough has a reputation for being a bit
dodgy but as soon as we walked in to the
club, someone advised us that we shouldn't
leave anything in the changing rooms as
there were thieves about. This was wasn't a
problem at least for the first 10 mins as
the door to the changing room was locked and
someone had nicked the key, meaning we
couldn't even gain entry!
OK, this week track gets
the description of being a bit like Asif
Ahmed. Not too bad really, soft on top, hard
underneath, and something in it for
everyone!
Slough won the toss and
decided they would bat, leaving Glen "I'm
going to try and do something different with
every ball except pitch it up on a length"
Stevens, and Asif "don't mess with me
sucker" Ahmed to open the bowling.
It was soon established
that the Slough opener who had hit 100+ last
week was happy to pull the ball all the way
to the boundary should we want to
continually bowl him rank long hops down the
leg side. That is until Asif decided to test
him with a wide long hop outside his off
stump which he thumped to backward point
only for Gobby to jump what seemed like 30
feet in the air and take a spectacular catch
one handed, Paul Collingwood style. Easily
catch of the season so far, but we weren't
finished yet and more was to come! Two balls
later Asif let go of a full bunger and the
number 3 bat obliged by popping the ball up
to Goochie in the covers. Not exactly going
to plan but still going our way!
Not a team to normally be
so competitive in the field, a wave of
enthusiasm inspired by Gobby's catch had the
Chalfont fielders trying to out do each
other. Asim next to take a spectacular one
handed catch that was going over his head
and to his right at gully to remove bat 4.
Next up was a more regulation LBW, and a
catch at 2nd slip from Tony, to give Asif
his 5 wickets in his 11th over for only 20
runs.
Meanwhile back in the
real world Akshay had been brought on at the
other end and was unfairly unrewarded for
some consistent line and length bowling,
finishing with figures of 0 for 14 off 5.
Asif, realising that sh*te balls get wickets
in this league, bowled another full toss for
the Slough number 7 to lob another up to
Goochie.
At the other end Tony was
bowling his flight and guile-ish pies and
took the wicket of the opener who had
managed to bat all this time for only 16,
with a classic off spin delivery. Asif got
another after Neil took an up and under at
mid off, and Tony realising that even the
Slough tail enders were savvy enough to wait
for the customary two bad balls an over that
he was bowling decided to bend his back and
start firing them down, getting a nibble
outside off for Adam to catch. Last man
standing and Slough put up a bit of a fight,
until the plucky number 10 drove the ball
back at Tony for him to take a diving one
handed catch low to his right. Slough all
out for 107 and Asif Ahmed returning figures
of 7 for 46 off 23 overs plus three
contenders for catch of the season in one
game!
Tea - a lovely selection
of mustard sandwiches with just a hint of
wafer thin ham.
Now if the bowling and
fielding was something to celebrate the
batting was more of something to give a
rather gentle middle of the road round of a
oh we really can't be bothered. Conditions
were not easy and Slough had dropped their
opening bowler from the team above who
cleaned up Goochie with an absolute peach in
the 3rd over for 1. With Potty showing some
tenacity at one end Asim played some shots
at the other. Unfortunately the last one
aimed at cow corner to a straight good
length ball was the wrong one and he was
duly sent packing for 12. A brief
partnership was formed between Tony and
Potts with both batsmen looking reasonably
comfortable, until Potty mistimed a drive to
mid on and was caught. Enter the seasoned
pro Dusty Mallender who had obviously
forgotten that we don't play pitches that
are as quick as the Oval and drove upishly
to mid off. Suddenly Slough were starting to
come to life, and thinking maybe, just maybe
they had a chance with Chalfont on 53 for 4.
Glen joined Tony at the
crease and a started to push on with a
couple of boundaries and some well taken
singles until he tried to ease the ball
round the corner and got a leading edge.
Adam was next up and helped nudge the score
closer to the target before being caught in
the covers. With the end in sight, Neil took
a cheeky two through to third man before
Tony sealed the game and 20 points. Both men
finished unbeaten on 2 and 46 respectively.
This week we have two
mottos/points of thoughts for you starting
with an oldie but a goody, catches win
matches. 8 of the 10 Slough wickets were
caught. And secondly, bad balls get wickets
with Asif Ahmed getting a 5 for from full
tosses!
Next week we are home to
Thatcham Town.
