On another baking hot day
the Sunday 1st XI entertained Wolverton Town
in the Skinner Cup (the Buckinghamshire
County Cup). Fortunately, we won the toss
and batted.
Against some testing
bowling from Wolverton, Matthew Stevenson
and Rhys Mander got the innings off to a
good start (a dogged 38 and a stylish 30
respectively), 75-1 from 19, but were then
both dismissed in quick succession. Zamir
Khan carried on the good work with 69 not
out, although it was Fareed Ahmed who really
caught the eye with a dazzling 45, including
some superb left-handed driving through (and
over) the covers. We finished on 207-7 from
our 45 overs but felt that our score was a
bit light - 240 was what we really needed.
Wolverton got off to a
flyer before spin twins Zamir Khan and Rhys
Mander tied them down in mid-innings. But it
was not to be, and despite a couple of late
wickets for the golden arm, Satish Sharma,
Wolverton ran out comfortable winners, 208-5
in 37.4 overs.

Chalfont Park Phoenix took a big step
towards promotion by beating Thames Valley
Cougars for the second time this season.
Needing a win to prevent the Cougars clawing
their way back into the promotion fight, the
Phoenix came from an early 7-0 deficit to
take the game 19-16. MVP - Tony, Donkey -
Geoff.
The
Flames travelled to the unbeaten league
leaders Burners on Thursday with just nine
players and played the game of their lives
to upset the favourites. The team played
incredibly well in all departments, taking
catches, aggressive base running, hitting
and walking. Final score 16-3. MVP - Sara,
Donkey - Chris.

A most local of local
derbies against Gerrards Cross II this week.
We stuffed GX at our place by 8 wickets a
few weeks ago and their lads were still
pretty sour about this, judging by the
attitude they took into the game (distinctly
arsey). GX is a quality place to play
cricket, nice pavilion, tree lined ground,
array of expensive cars in the car park,
collapsed tunnel just down the road, flat
wicket with a bit of bounce. Almost up there
with Chalfont Park - but not quite.
GX won the toss and put
us into bat... well they would have done had
we been there. It's a long way up the hill
from St Peter and the traffic was appalling.
Pads, gloves and boxes were flying around
the changing room as the Chalfont openers
prepared themselves for battle, finally
striding out to bat... then quickly running
back in again (0 for 2). Zed Khan (33) and
in form Tahir Rashid (69) showed their
experience and quality, to take the game
back to GX with a dashing 60 partnership
getting Chalfont back in the game. Tahir in
particular getting a rough LBW decision
after getting a long way forward. Satish
Sharma (33) played an excellent attacking
knock as another mini collapse was
manifesting itself. Satish was sometimes
unsure however whether to use his bat to
flay the ball to the boundary, or shove up
mid-wickets backside. A final total of 189
all out from 38 overs looked well below par
given a good wicket, short boundaries and
baked hard outfield.
Tea - large melons, oh
yes.
Zed and Fariq Ahmed
opened up with the old ball, bowling very
tidily to keep the runs tight early, but GX
gradually got a stranglehold on the game to
put themselves in a very comfortable
position (55 for 2 from 22 overs). Gary
Hales (55), well known to Chalfont over the
years, came to the cricket intent on all out
attack cracking the ball onto a few very
expensively laid lawns (130 for 3 from 35
overs). The game looked beyond Chalfont at
this stage with 26 overs still remaining and
only 60 required. A great stumping from
Rahul Punj, off Rhys Mander, to dismiss
Hales proved to be a big wicket as Chalfont
began to haul themselves back into the
match. Wickets started to tumble under
pressure from some excellent bowling and
fielding, all credit to Rhys, Zed and Fariq
for their performances. The game was well
and truly in the balance with GX at 180 for
8, but their tail end held their nerve to
see GX home. A great local derby with a
boisterous crowd. Credit to Chalfont for
showing character to get back in the game.
Chalfont 12 points GX 2XI
20 points.
