Twas the night before Prestcold and all through the night,
The seconds were restless prepared for the fight.

Cricket bats packed into bags with great care,
In the hope of some runs - something that's rare.

The players were all nestled snug in their beds,
As Kodak Moment catches danced through their heads.

Dan in unwashed kit and Murray in old,
"Makes the ball swing, does a bit of mould".

Out on the pitch there arose a great wail,
Nagle was out, but bring on the Hales!

Away to the crease, Yoxall was sent,
Back in one over, a batsmans lament.

On Murray, in flannels, cloth cap and glasses,
Scored 78, made the rest look like arses.

Nolder was in for an hour and ten,
Scored twenty and then half that again.

Next was the Webb, running making him cough,
Went for a wide and was caught at long off.

Two Thirty Six was the final score,
For seven you know, no less and no more.

Bring on the Judge, he bowls the quickest!
Just twenty runs and two vital wickets.

With Vallance unlucky (home umpiring you know),
Soon Yoxall Snr was stealing the show.

Wickets were tumbling, two each Webb and Upton,
The bowling of pies was causing destruction.

I woke from the dream to a round of applause,
We'd just beaten Prestcold by a mammoth score.

It wasn't a dream, we had won the match!
Bring on Chesham Bois, even if it is on their patch!

SCORPIONS 11 - CHALFONT PARK PHOENIX 17

Chalfont Park Phoenix took on Scorpions (and a vast array of their offspring) in their second WMDMSL match of the season on Wednesday looking to make it two victories from two games.

Phoenix started slowly with the bat and went 3 up, 3 down in both of the first 2 innings. In reply, Scorpions got four home, two in each inning.

Phoenix picked it up a little in the 3rd inning, getting home their first run of the evening, Clare Winter, off the bat of Geoff Brown, and ended the inning back in contention at just 6-4 down.

The Phoenix revival started in the 4th when great fielding by David Crossman at right field, throwing to Chris Yoxall at short, who then winged a great ball into Helen Kitto at Catcher to tag the suicidal Scorpions player and stop the run and seriously well, let's say, annoy her fellow team mates somewhat! This play lifted Chalfont's spirits somewhat and when up to bat next, got 9 runs home in our fast becoming traditional "1 big inning" to take a good lead into the 6th.

Phoenix kept it ticking over in the 6th, getting home another 2 runs, including a well struck home run from Neil Turner and then again fielded brilliantly to keep Scorpions at 3up, 3 down, culminating in an awesome diving catch from Chris Paine at Pitcher to seal the final out.

Phoenix got home one more run in the 7th so Scorpions came up to bat the match out needing 7 runs to win, and with their spirits dropping fast. Luckily, Scorpions again failed to score, due to more excellent play in the infield, including a great, if painful, stop by Carol Dapogny at first base.

Well played everyone, a great win over an established Division 2 team, which apparently left their captain offering to resign; such was their disappointment at not beating the new team to the league! Congratulations to Chris Paine who was voted MVP in the pub and many thanks to Liz Warner for coming along to support/score/base coach.

Next Wednesday sees Phoenix travel to Thames Valley Cougars for what should prove their toughest game to date.

Team: Geoff Brown, Helen Kitto, Tony Hewston, Carol Dapogny, David Crossman, Audrey Sternick, Chris Paine, Clare Winter, Chris Yoxall, Annie Brothwell, Neil Turner, Sarah Wood.

The first home game of the season for the Saturday 1st XI brought our local rivals Gerrards Cross (2nd XI) to Chalfont Park.

Gerrards Cross won the toss and elected to have first use of a decent looking pitch, pretty flat and with plenty of grass on it. In a complete reversal from last weeks debacle at Amersham, Chalfont got off to a flying start with GX in real trouble losing 3 wickets for only for 4 runs. An excellent opening spell from Saqib Ahmed (1-23 from 12 overs) and Shahid Din put the batsmen under pressure with continued accurate bowling, restricting the opposition to 46 for 3 from 24 overs before the first bowling change was required. Enter that master of timing Zed Khan bringing himself on just as the batsmen were having to step up a gear if they were to post a decent score. Zed finished with figures of 5 for 45 from 13 overs, continually taking wickets to restrict the opposition as they tried to accelerate. Enough credit can't go to Shahid bowling unchanged from the start with unstinting accuracy (25 overs, 4 for 53). A good all round display with the ball was capped with a solid fielding performance. GX finishing 123 all out from 49 overs.

Tea - a very fine Chalfont tea as usual. Panic spread though the team at the start of the tea interval with yours truly, Rahul and Zeddy the first up the stairs towards the sandwiches. Sandra, alert as ever to the potential crisis, made some excuse about the pizza's not being quite ready and would they be out in 5 minutes, to ensure there were at least a few crumbs for the remaining players.

The opposition started with the old ball for the second innings, using 2 spinners for the first 10 overs. A tactic that failed as Chalfont got off to a solid start putting on 55 for the first wicket, Andy Parsons (25) and Hanif (29). Rahul Punj (32 not out) and Zeddy saw us home, batting very sensibly as Chalfont cruised to victory (124 for 2 from 33 overs). A great all round effort ensured Chalfont 1 XI first victory of the season.

Chalfont 20 points. GX 3 points.
