Chalfont St. Peter Cricket Club: Minutes, 14th August, 2006

Present: Dan Webb (chairman), Tony Hewston, Dave Nolder, Andy Parsons, Matthew Stevenson, Chris N. Yoxall

Apologies: Mudo Ahmed, Saqib Ahmed, Andy Parsons, Murray Scott

Matters Arising

  • Trophies: Tony Hewston said that trophies had now been sent in for engraving.
  • Overseas players: Tahir Rashid was unable to come over this year.
  • TVCL & Neal Collins: the TVCL’s disciplinary committee basically endorsed the action taken by the club with no extra penalties.
  • TVCL & administration: as anticipated the 1st XI has been deducted five points for poor administration (and has also, incidentally, been deducted two further points for slow over rates).

Development Report

  • Capital expenditure: after a long debate it was agreed that our priorities should be a) completion of the practice facility, b) improvements to the square (new machinery?) and c) the purchase of covers; Dan Webb took the action to discuss these priorities with the club president, Sam Machin, re his generous offer to part fund the purchase of covers.
  • Biffa: Chris N. Yoxall said that investigations into the availability of grants from Biffa were ongoing.
  • CRB checks: Chris N. Yoxall reported that the whole committee will need to sign the forms together on one specified date.
  • Clubmark status: Dan Webb reiterated that Keith Neave and Jenny Brown should attend a Child Welfare course by the end of the year.
  • Development plan: Dan Webb reported that steady progress was being made on each of the development plans (1-year, 3-year and 5-year).

Cricket Report

  • Juniors: Dan Webb reported that the Junior Presentation Evening had been a great success.
  • Seniors: the Saturday 1st XI is still rooted to the bottom of Division 2B of the TVCL and facing relegation; the Saturday 2nd XI is doing much better and is currently placed 3rd in Division 5B, and has a great chance of promotion; the Sunday 1st XI has picked up recently with a few good wins in the TCSL and we have regularly fielded both 2nd XIs and 3rd XIs playing friendly fixtures.
  • Sunday 1st XI v. Farnham Royal: Matthew Stevenson reported that this match had been cried off by the club on Saturday evening, without consulting either the chairman, the fixture secretary, the selection committee or the Sunday 2nd XI captain, and despite the fact that we had three XIs out that day. Dan Webb said that this action was completely unacceptable and promised an investigation into what happened and why.
  • President’s Day: Matthew Stevenson said that everything was in place for this year’s event on Friday this week, 18th August, although there seem to be some problems with the President’s XI.
  • ICI paints: Matthew Stevenson reported that the 1st XI captain of ICI Paints had approached our 1st XI captain, Saqib Ahmed, to sound out the possibility of a merger next season. However, in the absence of Saqib Ahmed, it was not possible to have a detailed discussion on this matter.

Fixtures Report

  • Fixture secretary: Matthew Stevenson said that he would be unable to continue in this position after the end of this season for personal reasons; he said that he had informed Dan Webb of his decision several months ago and that it was not directly related to the Farnham Royal fiasco at the weekend.

Ground Report

  • Square: there has been some concern recently re the condition of the square; the committee broadly agreed that significant investment is required to improve matters. Dan Webb asked Dave Nolder to contact the groundsman’s association for advice. Andy Parsons said that Chris Wenman, the groundsman of Chenies & Latimer C.C., had offered to give us some advice - Dan Webb asked Andy Parsons to follow this up as well. Matthew Stevenson said that we should organize some work parties, on the first weekend after the end of the season, with a three-line whip for players to attend, to help Shabs with the end of season work.
  • Moles: there has been no further progress on the moles; Dan Webb took the action to try to find a solution.
  • New practice facility: Dan Webb reported that the topping to level out the unevenness on the surface had been applied.
  • Picket fence: Dan Webb reported that most of the picket fence had now been painted with used engine oil, and that the last panels would be completed before President’s Day.

Treasurer’s Report

  • Subscriptions: there are no outstanding debtors. However, there was some concern that a lot of players were paying "half" subs of £50, which is the wrong amount (it should be £60). Matthew Stevenson proposed that the cricket section follow the lead of the hockey section and introduce rolling 12-month memberships; Dan Webb asked that this be put on hold until next season.
  • Match fees: in the absence of Murray Scott, Matthew Stevenson said that he thought that the match fees were pretty well up-to-date.
  • Indian Barbecue: Dan Webb reported that there was still £120 of monies outstanding for this event, with £60 owed by both Zamir Khan and Mudho Ahmed.

Fund Raising Report

  • Fund raising: Andy Parsons reported that the CPSA social committee were planning several events, including a quiz night, a wine tasting evening and a film night.

CPSA Board Report

  • Bar committee: Dan Webb reported that the CPSA Board had not received the cricket section’s proposal for a bar committee with much enthusiasm, and the idea has been shelved for the time being.

Any Other Business

  • Clubhouse keys: Matthew Stevenson reported that, at a recent Sunday 1st XI match, there had been a mini crisis, with keys missing, half the doors locked and no spares available. Dan Webb said that Peter Banner was looking into the subject of clubhouse keys at the moment.
