Chalfont St. Peter Cricket Club: Minutes, 18th August, 2004

Present: Matthew Stevenson (chairman), David Banner, Phil Noot, David Peters, Rahul Punj, Satish Sharma

Apologies: Mike Burge, Zamir Khan, Murray Scott, Chris N. Yoxall

Matters Arising

• Saturday 1st XI captaincy: matters have been resolved and Zamir Khan will continue until the end of the season.
• Annual awards: Matthew Stevenson said that we would have to write off the missing trophies after this year’s annual dinner, and suggested that it might be a good time to review how many awards we should retain. Rahul Punj suggested that, in the future, the awards should not be taken away but rather kept in a safe place at the club, perhaps in a display unit or maybe on the top shelf behind the bar.
• Fixture booklets: the remaining £700 is still outstanding; Zamir Khan has promised to pay over this money when he returns from his holiday.
• Cricket balls: Zamir Khan will purchase some more balls on holiday in Pakistan.
• Euro 2004 Quiz: this was abandoned due to a very poor response and all monies were returned to those who did enter.
• President’s Day: Matthew Stevenson said that this had been a great success.
• Indian touring match: Matthew Stevenson said that the correct procedures had not been followed re the match which took place on Thursday, 4th August; he reminded all committee members that when making external bookings, the dates need to be checked with three parties:
o the cricket fixture secretary (Dan Webb) and groundsman
o the CPSA social director (Caroline Chipperfield)
o the caterers and bar staff (Taylormade)

Availability & Results

• Availability: this has away recently, not helped by injuries to three 1st XI players. We have though fielded two teams regularly on both Saturday and Sunday, and also managed to play a Saturday 3rd XI match two weeks ago.
• Results: the Saturday 1st XI is placed 6th out of 10 in Division 2B of the TVCL; the Saturday 2nd XI is placed 8th out of 10 in Division 4B. The Sunday 1st XI has had a run of defeats in the MASL but all the games have been competitive and enjoyable. The Sunday 2nd XI is playing every week and had a good win against Dunstable Town III at the weekend.
• TVCL administration: the 1st XI has been incurring a number of unnecessary fines recently, for example, not ringing in the result before 9.00pm and not sending in the result sheet on time. Matthew Stevenson said that this was a stupid waste of money and was also worried that the club may face disciplinary action at the end of the season; he said that he had asked Zamir Khan to address this matter.
• Juniors: Phil Noot said that the juniors had not had the best of seasons, partly due to the poor weather (full report to follow). He was also worried that not enough of the older boys were being offered games in the senior XIs; Matthew Stevenson said that we needed to address this as a matter of urgency next season. On a more positive note, Phil Noot said that we had fielded five teams regularly this season (from Under 11 through to Under 15), and that he has a parent lined up to take on the Under 11s next season. Matthew Stevenson said that we needed to think about coaching courses for junior players during the winter.

Fixtures

• Sunday 1st XI fixtures 2005: Zamir Khan has asked for more early season fixtures next season; this will be discussed in more detail at the next meeting.
• Over 40s v. Under 40s: Matthew Stevenson suggested that it might be a nice idea to add this traditional fixture to the calendar next season.
• Power cricket day: this has been arranged for Saturday, 11th September, but in the absence of Dan Webb no further details were available.

Finance

• Match fees: in the absence of Murray Scott, it was not clear whether these were all up to date. However, given that we have approximately £3500 in the bank, it would seem that the monies are coming in!
• Annual subscriptions: the main debtors at the moment (of those who have played three or more matches) are Salman Khan, Dean Page, Sohail Ijaz, Jonathan Lindsay, Malcolm Upton and John Woods.

Fund Raising

• ECB raffle: Matthew Stevenson reported that this had generated a profit of £461; the only disappointing aspect was that only 19 club members sold even part of their ticket allocations.
• Summer barbecues: there is another event planned for Saturday week, 21st August, but in the absence of Saqib Ahmed, no further details were available.

Social Report

• End of season dinner: in the continued absence of Mike Burge, there has been no further progress on this event; Matthew Stevenson said that he would take over responsibility for organising it. It will take place in the clubhouse, provisionally on Friday, 15th October. The cost will be approximately £15 per head. Matthew Stevenson asked all the captains to start drumming up support for the event.

Ground

• Square: David Banner said that the square has played poorly in the last few weeks; this is mainly due to the poor weather and is not the fault of the groundsman.
• Outfield: David Banner reported that there is a problem on the far side of the ground with dead grass and moss, and unevenness on both sides of the ground square of the wicket.
• Boundary rope: David Banner said that the boundary rope was still not always being put away properly after matches.
• Scarifying machine: David Banner reported that the blades would need sharpening in the not too distant future and the cost could be as much as £800. It was agreed that the machine has so far been doing a terrific job and has become almost invaluable. David Banner said that there was a possibility of obtaining some second hand replacement blades via the golf club.

CPSA Board Report

• 3rd XI ground: David Peters reported that the CPSA Board seemed unaware of how cricket wanted to proceed on this issue. Matthew Stevenson said that he was surprised to hear this, as he had sent an email explaining the committee’s view that it was not financially viable.

Any Other Business

• Bar opening times: Rahul Punj asked for clarification on when the bar should be open and when not; Matthew Stevenson said that he would ask for clarification from the CPSA board.
• Next meeting: Wednesday, 15th September, 8.00pm in the clubhouse.
