Chalfont St. Peter Cricket Club: Minutes, 8th October, 2003

Present: Saqib Ahmed, David Banner, Zamir Khan, Patrick Nagle, David Peters, Rahul Punj, Murray Scott, Matthew Stevenson, Dan Webb, Martin White

Apologies: Mike Burge, Simon Gooch

Matters Arising From Previous Minutes

• CPSA finances: Matthew Stevenson outlined the conversations, which he had recently had with the CPSA board, re the bar/teas contract and capital expenditure. It is possible that the CPSA board will not authorise all, or indeed any, of our capital expenditure wish list. He said that he did not think that cricket was self financing at the moment, and suggested that we set up a fund raising sub committee, with an initial aim of raising an extra £2,000 this winter. He asked Dan Webb to draw up a list of reservations to be discussed a) at future cricket meetings and b) taken to the CPSA board. The present teas contract expires before the start of the 2004 cricket season.
• Hockey Astroturf project: Matthew Stevenson explained that the Newlands Park astroturf pitch is likely to become unavailable at some time during the next two years, and that the hockey section must find an alternate home ground if it is to survive. If the hockey section folds, then the cricket section will, in all probability, go down with it, because we could not sustain the debts and overheads of running the new clubhouse on our own.

Cricket Report

• TVL report: we still do not know whether the 1st XI has been relegated from Division 2B. The 1st XI has incurred more fines for not returning result sheets and umpire cards. Matthew Stevenson suggested that Zamir Khan appoint someone in his team to take responsibility for this task.
• Juniors: in the absence of Phil Noot, there was no report.

Annual Awards

The winners of this year’s annual awards were agreed as below, with the exception of the Saturday 2nd XI award, which David Peters said was too close to call; he proposes to take some soundings from team members and will report back at the next meeting.

Club batsman: Zamir Khan
Club bowler: Zamir Khan
Club fielder: Jason Page
Clubman: Dan Webb
Saturday 2nd XI player: t.b.a.
Sunday 1st XI player: Zamir Khan
Sunday 2nd XI player: Neal Collins
Outstanding batting performance: Safi Ahmed
Outstanding bowling performance: Chris N. Yoxall
David Eade award (2nd XI catches): Dan Webb
Most promising young player: Dean Page
Six hit award: Zamir Khan

Fixtures Report

• Fixture Secretary: Matthew Stevenson said that he would be working in Jersey for the next six months and would therefore have to resign this position with immediate effect. Dan Webb very kindly offered to take over.

Treasurer’s Report

• Match fees: these have all been paid in.
• Annual subscriptions: there is only one outstanding debtor and Dan Webb will chase him for payment.
• Bills: Murray Scott said that all bills have been paid, including the one from the CCC.
• Financial results for 2003: Murray Scott reported that our profits were slightly down on last year. This was surprising, with additional midweek and 3rd XI fixtures in the 2003 season, but slightly more games were lost to weather than in 2002, and there were more players paying reduced match fees due to unemployment or being students.
• Cricket balls: Matthew Stevenson said that we had approximately 20 cricket balls left over from the 2003 season. He suggested to Zamir Khan that, if he had the opportunity to do so, it would be worth buying 20-30 more balls the next time he goes to Pakistan.

Ground Report

• End of season work: David Banner said that this had been completed.
• Groundsman’s performance: Matthew Stevenson said that he had written to David Banner to complain about the poor quality of the Chalfont Park square during the 2003 season.

Any Other Business

• Next meeting: this will take place on Wednesday, 12th November, 8.00pm, in the clubhouse.
