Ladies 1st 0-7 Trojans

Amersham & Chalfont failed to pull off a giant killing act in the third round of the Hockey England Cup, losing 0-7 to Trojans from the Premier Division of the National League at Newland Park on Sunday. The Southampton side, who are without a league win this year and who were missing Alex Danson at the World Cup with England, dominated throughout. However they had to wait until the 19th minute to breach the Amersham & Chalfont defence. Having failed to score from the first 8 of their penalty corners Trojans were gifted a penalty stroke when a prostrate Lynda Bullock swept the ball away with the back of her stick. Alison Wakefield converted clinically. Six minutes later Judy Coe swept in a penalty corner rebound for the second and 2 minutes before half time former England international Kathryn James chipped in a rebound after Vicki Willaims had done well to save Lucy Unwin's flicked penalty corner shot.

Any chances of an Amersham & Chalfont revival disappeared in the first 4 minutes of the second half when Tamsin Pascoe, Trojan's player-coach scored twice, the second following a determined run by Wakefield. A&C's only chance fell to Cal Tomlinson but Sarah Ellis in the Trojan's goal, in her one call into action, saved well. Occasional flashes by Katy Shaw and Caroline Coates failed to penetrate the Trojan's defence and a sixth goal came from a superb penalty corner strike by Nadine Devereux. With 2 minutes remaining, Lucy Steele completed the scoring.

On Saturday the Ladies 1's stayed top-of-the-table in the Trysports Three Countire League with a 1-0 victory away to Maidenhead. Katy Shaw scored the only goal of the game.

MENS 1STreport

Hendon 0-5 Mens 1st

Amersham and Chalfont met bottom of the league Hendon away on Saturday. Determined to show their abilities, the early push started with Watts pressing the Hendon defence and exposing their frailties. This spurred A&C on and some strong tackling from Crossman in the centre led to Watts, top of the D, rounding a charging keeper before calmly slotting home on his reverse from wide left, leaving diving defenders in his wake. Minutes later, after several failed short corners a flick was awarded as the Hendon post man stopped a flick from Scott on the line with his chest. This left Crossman to slot home into the bottom corner.

The second half was about A&C control, as patient build ups led to goals from Captain Cartledge and player coach Jonathon Budd, and a deft rebound from Watts to get his second of the match. Final praise though fell on A&C Sweeper Charlie Wooler, man of the match, as Hendon left the field having failed to get any scoring opportunity, after Wooler commanded and ran an impenetrable defence.

Team: Lovelace, Wooler, van Duyenbode, Heath, Westaway, van Eestren, Budd, Crossman, Sargent, Scott, Watts, McCallion, Cartledge.

In the run up to Christmas the side meet top of the table Wokingham, OMT and Bicester with Cheshunt at home in the English Hockey Vase Competition on 1st December at 2pm.

MENS 4THreport

Mens 4th 1-1 Harrow

After a promising start with a very smooth inject, stop, strike, short corner goal this was a disappointing result for the Mens 4s. The home team commanded the lions share of possession, created good positions and won several more short corners. David Nicklin got himself into an excellent position on the keeper on two occasions but unfortunately could not convert. Before half time Harrow got their equaliser from a well worked long corner piece. Marking was tight and organised but a good shot from the edge of the D left Tommy unsighted and a difficult bouncing ball beat him at the near post.

Into the second half and A&C continued to play good hockey creating several openings but as the Harrow ( stand in) goalie proceeded to have the game of his life after a shaky first half it began to look like one of those days.

In the end Harrow had earned their point and a point is all A&C deserved having not made the possession count. Hopefully lessons were learned. Certainly such game disruption from Umpire swapping will not be tolerated in future.....the captain for one still learning! I would like to note another fine performance from James Lander in midfield... and thanks to Ian Ringham for basically controlling a whole pitch so well, with the opposition fielding inexperienced umpires.

The biggest thanks goes to the Mens 5s for getting a point against Rover Oxford and so protecting our lead at the top... cheers boys.
