newsMENS 2ND

As most of you know I'm not standing for captain next season and I would like to thank Guy Ross for all the umpiring he has done during the season and everyone who played for the 2nd XI for all their efforts. Its been another good season even though we couldn't quite reach the highs of last year. Good luck to my successor, have a great summer and see you all in September.

jimKEENAN

So what are you going to be doing to keep in shape over the summer until the new hockey season starts in early September? A few summer games? Maybe an odd game of cricket or netball? Not Jim Keenan.

Jim has been training hard for what now seems years, missing games and when he has played he has been running back to the club after the game rather than driving. For what? Well, he's going out to Lanzarote in May to take part in a Triathlon... it's not a small one... it's called an Ironman. An Ironman race is

A 3.8k swim in the sea
followed by a 180km bike ride
followed by a marathon!

That's equivalent to about three marathons back to back, all in the heat, hills and wind of Lanzarote making it the toughest triathlon you can do (more so than the Hawaii race). Jim reckons it should take him just over thirteen hours whereas the winners will be completing the race in just under nine. It all makes the three mile run I have planned for the weekend look a bit tame. Absolutely awesome.

Anyway, if you want to find out more, to just wish him well or simply to pledge some sponsorship (he's raising money for Leukemia Research) you can email him at James.Keenan@French-Thornton.co.uk.

Good luck Jim!

Ladies 1st 2-1 Wallingford

Amersham & Chalfont won promotion from Division 1 of the Trysports Three Counties League in an exciting and tense match on Saturday at Newland Park. In a game that they had to win to leapfrog Wallingford and return to the top local division, A&C showed a lot of character, especially once their opponents had equalised. A&C had started well and looked very dangerous when they intercepted a few wayward cross-field passes. It was from one of these interceptions that they took the lead after just 4 minutes when Caroline Coates, who was a constant threat up the left wing, set-up Cal Tomlinson to score. The same player nearly added a second shortly afterwards and then Annie Brothwell and Catherine Watson combined down the right before the 'keeper had to kick clear. Wallingford forced several penalty corners but their novel routines were well defended throughout the match especially by Sarah Watts and Lynda Bullock who showed great anticipation. Vicki Williams did pull off one smart save to keep her goal intact.

The second-half started with a Tomlinson strike being expertly stopped on the line from a penalty corner. On 45 minutes, Wallingford drew level following a great piece of individual skill. A&C thought that they had taken the lead 4 minutes later when Alison Spicer put the ball in the goal but after a long consultation between the umpires the goal was disallowed. A&C then tried to press further forward looking for that all important winner. This did however leave the odd hole at the back and Williams made one superb save when she found herself one-on-one with a Wallingford forward. With just 10 minutes left, following a penalty corner, Brothwell passed for Spicer to again put the ball over the line. This time there was no disputing the goal. With Watson and Katie Boughen shoring up the middle of the pitch, Wallingford were not given a chance to equalise again as A&C ran out deserved winners.

Team: Williams; Watts, Spicer; Hagan, Parker, Bullock; Hewitt, Shaw, Coates; Brothwell, Tomlinson; Sub: Watson, Boughen.

CPSA Darts Match

The first official CPSA darts team will be playing away against a team from the Waggon and Horses in Chalfont St. Peter this Thursday. Whilst some of the ladies have turned to Netball to keep fit over the summer, some of the men (and of course ladies are welcome) have decided to take up Darts. If it is a successful evening and there is enough interest, we will enter a league over the summer. The match this Thursday starts at 8 for 8.30 in the Waggon so come along and give your support to the team.

MENS VETSnews

Due to our expanding vets section, we are entering a team in the Wessex Seniors Fixture Alliance next season and Peter Colwill has been voted Captain by the team (to be ratified at the AGM).

This Sunday the Vets are also playing in the 20th Wokingham Veterans Tournament and hoping to follow up the success they've had in winning the tournament in 2001 and 2002.

MENS VETSreport

Mens Vets 3-5 Bedford

With Bedford conceding the veterans league match due to a shortage of older players, Amersham and Chalfont Veterans lost to a composite Bedford side on Saturday due to goalkeeping errors. They conceded an early goal before some good teamwork saw the Newland Park side draw level through Sean Cremin. Unfortunately, poor defending and youthful exuberance helped the visitors extend their lead to turn round 4-1 up at half time.

Amersham and Chalfont started the second half with renewed determination and Trevor Wood reduced the deficit within five minutes. Tony Fermor scored again for the home side a short time later but, as A & C pushed forward for the equaliser, another goalkeeping error saw the visitors extend their lead to 5-3. The home forwards continued to pressurise the visitor's goal without further success.

Team: Carter, Coleman, Whayman, Warren, Johnstone, Fermor, Lamborn, Paul, Richman, Cremin, Colwill, Holmes, Wood.
