A&C continued their good early season form and won this fast-paced game against Oxford University in the Trysports League Division 1 on Saturday at Newland Park. The game was played at a high tempo throughout by both sides and this made for some exciting hockey.

Oxford took the lead after just 3 minutes with one of their first attacks. A&C responded though with some slick passing moves and broke forward quickly and chances started to be created. Laura Patterson had a couple of opportunities, firstly shooting wide after driving through into the D and then just failing to get on the end of a cross as she dived in front of goal. Caroline Coates was also denied by the keeper.

The second-half saw A&C up their game just that bit more and they equalised 4 minutes after the break. Erin Ruxton, who started to look dangerous once switched to the left, picked up a loose ball in the middle of the pitch and drove at the heart of the defence before slipping the ball forward into the D. Patterson then swivelled and swept the ball into the goal in one movement.

With skipper Coates leading by example and Alex Teasdale looking very solid in the middle of the pitch, A&C started to enjoy some good spells of possession and deservedly went head midway through the half. Coates’s goal-bound strike was neatly deflected by Patterson past the keeper.

The students were not finished though and Lynda Bullock made one fine goal-line clearance and Catherine Watson made several timely tackles at the back as the university’s forwards burst through. Ruxton nearly put the game beyond doubt when her fine run finished with a well struck shot that was deflected wide. In the end though, A&C proved worthy winners in a well-contested match.
