A&C edged out Reading in their top of the table clash at Newland Park on Saturday to consolidate their position at the top in Division 1 of the Trysports Three Counties League. Reading started strongly and won a series of penalty corners. From one of these they won a penalty stroke after just 3 minutes but Tanya Fyffe pulled off a save.

Disappointed with their failure to score, Reading then found themselves on the back foot as first Caroline Coates had her shot saved from a penalty corner and then a dangerous run and cross from Laura Patterson just eluded the onrushing forwards. Reading's response saw, firstly, Sarah Cartledge clearing well in front of her goal when under pressure and then Fyffe advancing off her line to make a fine save in a one-on-one situation.

A&C started to put together some passing moves and enjoyed some good possession. It was no surprise when they took the lead after 16 minutes. Natalie Durkin put in a quick burst outside the circle and threaded the ball through to Katy Shaw to score at the back post. A&C's spell of dominance was further rewarded 6 minutes later when Alex Teasdale passed the ball into the circle for Coates to turn and shoot in.

A&C seemed to be in control of the game until Reading scored on the stroke of half-time against the run of play. This ensured that the second-half was a closely fought battle although A&C still carved out the early chances of the half. Patterson and Shaw were both denied by Jenny Sawyer in the Reading goal and Annie Brothwell shot just wide from a penalty corner.

As the game wore on, Reading started to enjoy some pressure of their own and Fyffe was called upon again to save and Rachel Parker worked tirelessly in the centre of defence to keep the Reading forwards at bay. With the final play of the game, Brothwell produced a goal-line clearance to ensure A&C took all three points.

On Sunday, A&C advanced into the last 8 of the Ladies Vase with a 1-0 win away to Rolls Royce in Derby thanks to a goal from Clare Winter.
