In the 4th round of the Vase
on Sunday the Mens first XI met Ely City hoping
to progress to the Quarter Final stage. Early
surges showed A&C to be on top of the match, and
it wasn't long before a rebound from a low shot
was collected by Richard Martin and lobbed over
the keeper. This should have opened the door for
A&C, but some determined keeping and resilient
defence held the team to a single goal, before a
quick break against the run of play found Ely
equalising from an open short-corner. It had
been a controlled first half, with the defence
holding the Ely attack mainly to their own half,
but the attack failing to capitalise on many
chances.
The second period changed this, as the A&C
forwards began to exploit games in the pressured
defence. With Watts running the right touch,
supported by van Duyvenbode pushing high, the
openings began to tell, and without some
excellent keeping from the Ely 'keeper the game
could have quickly been closed off.
The second goal was again came from a Cartledge
shot, slipped past the Ely 'keeper, Martin dived
to divert the ball past the last defender. This
gave the confidence to the A&C team and with
Scott stepping higher a third soon appeared as a
short corner saved on the line was bundled over.
The close to the match came as Scott latched
onto a weak clearance and watched his reverse
sweep clear the diving keeper.
Ely put up a good resistance, but with the
tireless running of Watts and the marauding of
Richard Martin they were always under pressure.
Yet again the A&C defence showed poise and
control to keep the Ely attacks to a minimum,
and were well supported by the midfield who
really controlled the pace of the match. With
many A&C fans on the sideline this was a good
win to put the team through to the next round at
home on 21st March.

A&C's fight against
relegation took a dent as they lost out in a
high-scoring game against Oxford University
first team on Saturday. In an amazing opening 11
minutes of play which saw 5 goals scored, the
game was played at a great tempo.
A&C took the lead after just
55 seconds when Caroline Coates's neat turn and
shot was saved but Laura Patterson scored from
the follow-up. The Uni equalised within 40
seconds and then took the lead from their first
penalty corner after 6 minutes. A&C responded
immediately when Annie Brothwell's goalbound
sweep from a penalty corner was saved by the
'keeper but Patterson was there again to score.
The remarkable opening
sequence of goals then saw A&C regain the lead
as Katy Shaw converted Katie Boughen's cross.
Heidi Frick then nearly made it four as her shot
whistled across the face of the goal.
Undeterred by all of this,
the students played some fast flowing hockey
with quick movement off the ball by their
players which caused constant problems for A&C
and they equalised again after 22 minutes. After
this, a further three goals in the next ten
minutes put Oxford firmly in control.
Quite remarkably, a game
which had nine goals in the first-half only had
one in the second-half which came just 2 minutes
after the break and was scored by the students.
Despite no further goals there was always the
threat, particularly from Oxford, but strong
performances in the middle of the pitch by Shaw
and Erin Ruxton helped A&C still maintain some
forward momentum.
Team: Fyffe; James; Campbell,
Parker, Brothwell; Coates, Shaw, Boughen, Ruxton;
Frick, Patterson; Subs: Durkin, Bullock.
