The Saturday 2's won their first game for 8 weeks when they comfortably beat Kidmore End by 8 wickets and as a result lifted themselves out of the relegation zone. Being asked to bat first, Kidmore lost their first wicket in just the second over when Dean Page took a good catch after having the ball belted at him at mid-on. Tight bowling by both Martin Cartledge (3-34) and Asif Raza (3-37) resulted in some loose shots being played and regular wickets falling. A stubborn 8th wicket partnership saw Kidmore past the 100 mark but once Javaid Ali (2-21) made the breakthrough, Page (2-4) finished the innings off.

Chalfont's reply suffered an early reply when Ali was out in the second over. However, Kevin Braithwaite (35) and James Mallinder (47no) steadied things with a partnership of 87 and eased the team towards a much needed victory before Tony Hewston came in to finish proceedings with a six. Chalfont won with more than 35 overs to spare.

This week's performance of the week has to go to Asif Raza for his 7-33 in the Saturday 2nds game against NPL Teddington.

MENS PLAYING REP AND TREASURER

After several years in the role of Treasurer, Drew has unfortunately decided to call it a day. I would like to thank him for all his hard work as not only did he do this for a long time, but also combined it with the Chairmans role, Secretary and who knows what else. Luckily for the section Tim Brooker has kindly agreed to take over the role to make sure that the section can continue to function throughout the next season.

This however leaves the role of Mens Playing Rep as vacant. This committee role is highly rewarding, and involves discussion on selection processes, training and all aspects of the playing arena. Once a month Committee meetings are exciting forums for debate and a good chance to have a say in where the mens section is heading within the Hockey and within CPSA. I am looking for a volunteer to take up the role, so if you think this could be of interest to you, please call or e-mail me to find out more. It is an important part of playing in the section and I would hope that all men that enjoy their hockey at A&C would be interested in helping with this crucial role.

Thanks,
Warren (Chairman)

GERRARDS CROSS 3 -v- ACHC VETS 4

Trevor Wood scored the decisive goal with minutes remaining to give the veterans their first win of the summer at Beaconsfield on Monday. It was just reward for Wood's persistent chasing when he stole the ball from an unsuspecting defender on the edge of the twenty five and drove purposefully into the circle to finish with aplomb.

This was the culmination of a creditable fight back from A&C who were trailing 1-3 with 15 minutes remaining. An inspirational solo effort by Ian Ringham reduced the deficit before Ross Gorbert equalised, pouncing on a penalty corner rebound, after Peter Whayman's initial shot had been saved. Gorbert, who just turned up to watch, picked an opportune moment to score his first goal for over two years.

Amersham and Chalfont's other goal was scored by Phil Stewart who completed a slick passing move for a first half equaliser.

The 2XI named possibly their strongest ever side on Friday night, only to have it changed on Sunday morning when a quick phone call confirmed that one player was now playing for the ones. So we just phoned somebody else up, don't worry about us.

Chiswick & Latymer II were the visitors, and for the second day in a row, Webb won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a brand new bouncy track. With C&L short of a player, Gareth Noot kindly filled in for them until four players turned up. With this turn of events, Upton dropped out to concentrate on his drinking and we welcomed into our side a colts player from C&L named Amar - or A. Ringer in the scorebook. With the score at 40-0, Chalfont were motoring on nicely and somehow contrived to end up on 119 all out, with the ball keeping lower than a limbo dancer in Haiti. Hales and Collins scored as best they could but it was to no avail. A straight turnaround ensued as tea was not completely ready.

Defending such a low total was never going to be easy, and C&L batted slowly but sensibly. Jon Lindsay had his angry head on and the ball whizzed through to the keeper like an exocet for his 12 overs for one (well caught by Collins behind), but it was Hales, bowling spin at the other end, doing all the damage. With flight and turn, he dispatched 5 batsmen from 23 overs for a miserly 40 runs. Steve Baker chipped in with three wickets of his own before the recall of Jon Lindsay to bowl nastily with his angry head at the tail ender - an 11 year old boy - who, to his credit, did well to edge the ball past slips repeatedly. With the score tied at 119 each, the nipper's luck ran out and he edged to Amar in the slips, who took it brilliantly above his head. That's right, their player got us the draw (we won't talk about the umpiring for LBWs which should have given us the win).

Incidentally, if anyone thought that Flintoff's 'chat' was instrumental in getting wickets for England, they should really come down and have a listen to the 2XI some time who are masters of this. A list can be supplied for a small fee.

And so now onto a friendly 2XI vs Dads and Colts - will Lindsay bowl aggresively at them as well and can Webb keep this vaguely good streak going?

The Sunday 1st XI travelled out to Oxfordshire to take on Tiddington in an MASL match.

We batted first and posted what looked to be a good total, 207-5 in 40 overs. Javaid Ali (40) and Simon Gooch (21) got us off to a good start, before Justin Weller (76 not out) and Rahul Punj (33) provided the late innings acceleration. Adil Irfan (1-35) and Dean Page (1-31) then both bowled their eight overs straight off, and at 70-2 after 16 overs we were just about on top. However, at this point, the Tiddington batsmen started to dominate, and despite some good spin bowling from Rahul Punj (1-40) and Amit Puri (2-54), and a respectable spell of seam bowling from Mike Burge (1-27), they eventually ran out comfortable winners, 208-6 in 35.2 overs. Our fielding let us down a bit, and we were probably 20-30 runs short, but it was a good game of Sunday cricket.
