Back in the early years of
the National League when Havant were adding
considerably to their trophy cabinet, the
Hampshire club enjoyed a reputation for being
one of the most friendly, sociable and efficient
on the circuit. How pleasant it was on Saturday
to find that this was still the case. A much
depleted Vintage side mustered a valiant eight
for the trek to the south coast and Havant
generously provided spare players and a second
umpire for a prime time slot on the water based
pitch at Havant College, their primary home
venue.
After taking an early lead
Havant failed to find their way past Malcolm
Carter's impressive performance in the Amersham
goal. Although Havant enjoyed a greater degree
of possession, Chalfont were not without
chances. Sean Cremin was a constant threat down
the right wing winning several penalty corners
but Alan Crossman, magnificent as he was in
defence, failed to take advantage of his
promotion to number one corner striker.
Trevor Wood went close with a
brave deflection but an equalizer eluded the
visitors.

Amersham and Chalfont
prepared for this week's league resumption with
another friendly against Bracknell - who beat us
2-1 at the start of the season. This match was
completely different with A&C dominating from
the start. The movement and passing was
excellent from every member of the team and it
didn't take long to break the Bracknell defence
down. The first goal was converted from a short
corner won by Scott and slotted neatly by
Cartledge. The second came from a pass from Van
Duyvenbode to Watts who rounded three players
and ran round the back before laying the ball
off to Cartledge to score from a difficult
angle. The third before half time was again from
Cartledge, this time a wonderful flick from
another short corner - giving the keeper no
chance.
The break saw Bracknell
starting to make further inroads, though nothing
significant, although a goal was scored at
Lovelace's near post giving them an opening. A&C
made it 4-1 from a short corner won by Watts who
was repeatedly hacked on the way to the D with
Chiles converting another training ground
routine at the near post. Bracknell scored
another two goals one from open play and again
the near post and one from a well struck short
corner before Cartledge scored another goal,
this time from open play and a rebound from a
Scott shot which he flicked into the top of the
net.
Team: Lovelace, Chiles, Van
Duyvenbode, Watts, Martin, Woolfenden, Turner,
Wardman, Scott, Cartledge.
