A
disappointing batting
performance underpinned the
Saturday 2's loss to Windsor at
home by 8 wickets. Electing to
bat first in hot conditions,
Chalfont soon found themselves
struggling at 16 for 2. Matt
Stevenson (18) and Tony Hewston
(23) started to repair the
damage before both were out in
quick succession. Some clean
hitting from Martin Cartledge
(21) and David Peters (24) moved
the score on to 89 when the loss
of two wickets in two balls left
Chalfont struggling at the
halfway stage of their allotted
overs. The innings finally came
to an end at 129 with the loss
of the final three wickets in
the 43rd over.
Windsor's
reply was certainly very
watchful as their opening
batsmen survived a few loud
appeals. Asif Raza (2-38) was
the only successful bowler but
Cartledge and Jonathan Lindsay
also bowled with great heart.
Javaid Ali provided a few
testing deliveries but with all
the time to score their runs,
Windsor were under no real
pressure as they finally reached
their target after 41 overs.

The
Phoenix are making use of a bye
week this Thursday (12th) by
having a internal training game
at the club from 7pm. Everyone
is welcome so even if you
haven't been along yet this
season but fancy giving it a go,
then this would be an ideal
opportunity.
The league
season resumes next Thursday
with Rhythm II visting the
Phoenix. The teams are level on
10 wins from 11 games this
season so this could prove to be
a key game in deciding where the
league title goes.

PRESIDENTS
DAY
After the
disappointment of the last two
seasons, when President's Day
was both times washed out
without a ball being bowled,
this year's match was played in
hot, sunny weather. All of the
President's XI were either
former players of the club, or
current/former hockey players,
and it was a great social
occasion. Watch out on the web
site in the next few weeks for
the photographs. The President's
XI won the toss and batted
first, making 260 all out,
thanks in the main to Graham
Curnow, who reminded us all what
a brilliant batsman he was for
the club during the 1996 season,
with a superlative knock of 143
not out; Jason Nagle was the
other notable contributor with
25. In reply, the club XI was
always behind the clock, with
Duncan Ward and Tim Barry both
putting in good bowling spells,
and, despite 91 from skipper
Zamir Khan, was eventually
bowled out for 224, leaving the
President's XI the victors by 36
runs.

5th & 6th
TEAM CAPTAINS NEEDED
We now have
captains for the first four
teams for each section, but lack
a ladies 5ths captain and a Mens
5ths and a 6ths captain. While
some interest has been shown in
helping the Ladies 5's we have
had no feedback on the running
of the Mens teams.
Without these
roles it will be almost
impossible for these teams to
function. So if you are possibly
going to be in these teams next
year it would really be in your
interest to help or to help us
find someone to take up the
roles.
The roles
would involve attending
selection meetings once a week,
arranging the team for the week
and getting the match fees
collected and dropped in the
safe. We have an umpire
coordinator to help get you an
umpire, and pitches are all
booked and opposition sorted.
The teas coordinator will be
there to get your numbers for
teas, and so a few phone calls
to players and the meeting are
not a huge commitment to help
run a side and help so many
people enjoy hockey at A&C.
Please call
or mail to chat if you think you
may be able to help! warren@chalfontsports.org.uk

Thanks,
The Hockey Chairman

SATURDAY
1ST XI
The Saturday
1st XI suffered a disappointing
defeat away to Beaconsfield II.
We batted first and posted our
best score of the season so far,
229-7 in 52 overs, with Rahul
Punj top scoring with 77.
However, we didn't make the most
of the last ten overs, scoring
less than 40 runs, and this cost
us dear later, Beaconsfield
eventually passing our total
with just four balls to spare,
231-6 in 47.2 overs. So, defeat
by four wickets.
SUNDAY 1ST XI
The Sunday
1st XI travelled out to the
wilds of Kidmore End for an MASL
match. It was a topsy-turvy
game, we reduced Kidmore to
120-7 but then let them get up
to 202-8 in their 40 overs, and
this proved costly. Dean Page,
Amit Puri and Rhys Mander all
picked up a few wickets. In
reply, we were struggling at
100-5 in 24 overs before a
sparkling 70 from Adil Irfan
nearly won the match for us. But
we were eventually bowled out
for 198 in 39.2 overs, so defeat
by just 4 runs.

Yeading
Cavaliers. Many a year have we
played them in spirits of gay
abandon, with many a joke shared
between brethren linked by
cricket and forged by alcohol.
Sadly this will be no more, for
this is Yeading's last year as
they will be folding at the end
of the season. Ten man Chalfont
supplemented themselves with the
inclusion of a talented bowler
and batman and got themselves
into a right old two and
eight...........
It all
started well when Chalfont won
the toss and elected to bat on
what looked a decent track. The
inclusion of Hales into the
attack may have had something to
do with this. So second ball and
Hales is back in the pavilion
after recieving a banana ball
from the opener. Our batting is
now finished and we contend as
best we can against a swing
bowler from one end and a fast
bowler from the other. Nolder,
Andersen, Lindsay, Brown,
Collins (Nick, not Neal) and
Davenport fall without overly
bothering the scorer.
Fortunately, Yeading now put on
their 'normal' bowlers that we
have played against in previous
years. Webb, suffering from his
libations from the day before,
scores a quick 18, nearly throws
up, then gets out to a U-Boat
delivery, Noot smashes a six,
Upton scores a Sunday best 12
and Nagle has a pint. 77 all
out.
A quick turn
around and Hales has their
opener trapped lbw for 0, a
polite discussion ensues about
the validity of the decision,
and the batsman retruns two
balls later to take over the
umpiring. Ahem. More discussions
ensue between the new batsman
and some of the Chalfont team.
There is such bad feeling that
Webb takes an over to change
Lindsay and Hales' ends. This
results in 2 sixes (both balls
lost) and 17 runs. Well, so
would you if you were bowling
against a Saturday 1s player
from Harefield. Eventually Hales
won his argument by uprooting
the middle stump and nearly
blinding the 'keeper with the
bails, and Jon Lindsay claimed a
rare 'bowled' wicket, also
removing middle stump. However
it was all in vain as Chalfont
went in for tea at 5.05pm having
already lost the game and taking
only three wickets.
Next week
sees the trip to Dunstable
(Bandit Country) - where
Chalfont have yet to win a
single game. But we take with us
our last, best hope for all of
humanity - cans of lager to numb
the pain.
