The Sunday 2XI welcomed first
time visitors the Duke Of Hamilton to leafy
Bucks at the weekend, keen to improve on their
run of draws and wins of late. With the pitch
looking wet and the weather outlook not too good
either, it was decided that a 35 overs a side
match should be played. Chalfont won the toss
(in itself a winning feat - Chalfont have won
the toss more this year than any other) and
elected to bat. This was a brave decision,
Chalfont being as they were without Collins,
Hales, Baker, Yoxall or indeed any recognized
opening batsmen.
With the low bounce afforded
by the damp pitch, and the fact that DOH's
opening bowler had yet to turn up, Phil Noot (0)
- a late replacement for the erratic Thomas -
was triggered LBW as was fellow opener Davenport
(12). Dave Nolder removed the duck from his new
bat with a one before being caught and bowled by
DOHs newly arrived opener. Geoff 'Bungle' Brown
could not improve on last weeks six and four,
going out for nought after slogging across the
line, the fool. Dave Andersen (39) batted well
for over an hour, but when he was out it was
Webb (38) and Paine (16) - a very late inclusion
after another drop out - who steadied the ship,
with cameos from Noot (4) and Lindsay (2*) and
Upton (0*), to take the score to a respectable
156-9 from 35 overs. Special mention to our best
friend Jonny Extras who again top scored with
39.
After a sumptuous tea, and
with the expected rain not materialising, DOH
batted on a drying pitch that wasn't keeping as
low as Chalfont had played against. Opener Jon
Lindsay took his best figures for some time with
10-0-24-2 and Gareth Noot with 6-1-20-1.
However, the story of the day was not the
bowling of Webb (8-0-31-2), Upton (7-0-21-2) or
Andersen (3-2-4-1), but the stunning catch at
gully by Chris Paine - and absolute rocket above
his head that he held magnificently to remove
the opener for 30. It was also a day of
redemption for ball-magnet Bungle Brown (who
dropped four last week) who took one skyer from
Upton's deceptively slow swing, and one absolute
screamer of a sliding catch millimeters above
the grass from Dobber Andersen. With two runouts
completing the rout, DOH were duly bowled out
for 114 and the drinking could commence.
So the bandwagon that is the
2XI proves that it can roll on without its top
order, others coming to the fore when required.
Last game of the season is against Little
Kingshill, where Chalfont have failed to record
a victory in three years. Blessed
are the cheesemakers!

Our friends from Fleet were
the visitors to Chalfont Park on Saturday. Fleet
riding high pushing for promotion, Chalfont
needing points to steer clear of relegation
trouble. By 18:00 hrs Fleet were still riding
high looking for promotion and Chalfont are
still looking for points to be safe.
Chalfont won the toss and
elected to bat first on a very wet wicket, with
extra batting points available. The first
innings was very tight. Fleet bowled with a lot
of discipline, a consistent off stump line, just
back of a length, perfect on this wicket. Their
young seamer bowled all afternoon from one end
(26 overs 5 for 76), these figures were looking
even better until Satish Sharma smashed a very
fine 47 runs at the death. There was good
support from Raff Moughhal (33), Shahid Din (25)
and Andy Parsons (22). It was a committed
batting display in difficult conditions. Going
into Tea with 172 on the board Chalfont felt
they had a competitive total to defend.
Tea - very fine as usual,
apart from the empty chip bowl. Must remember to
get in the hutch before Satish next time.
Fleet's opening bat arrived
at the wicket after providing commentary on our
batting technique for most of the first innings.
A number of well meaning, constructive comments
followed from the fielders along the lines of
'putting his bat where his mouth is'. Then he
did, smoting 70 odd. We bowled poorly at times
to be honest, too short or too full, not much in
between, and Fleet cruised to 173 for 2 from 35
overs.
Chalfont 7 points. Fleet 20
points.
Last league game next week
away at Tring Park. 8 points required to be
absolutely sure of safety should results not go
our way.

The Saturday 2's lost by 3
wickets in a tense relegation battle away to
High Wycombe. Chalfont lost a crucial toss and
were asked to bat first on a very wet track.
They were soon in trouble at 8 for 2 before
Simon Seabrook (27) and James Mallinder (47)
fought hard to put on 52 for the third wicket.
Scoring at a fast rate was always difficult and
only Martin Cartledge's 4 and 6 off consecutive
balls momentarily upped the tempo of the
innings. All the batsmen struggled against
accurate bowling in the difficult conditions and
Chalfont were finally all out for 131 in the
51st over.
Wycombe's reply started off
confidently until a superb leg-side catch by
Adam Laubser initiated the fall of the first
wicket. However, Wycombe's innings continued
until the score reached 65 for 2 when three
wickets fell for no runs including another
excellent one handed catch at full stretch by
Laubser behind the stumps. Asif Raza (6-74)
produced another marathon spell from one end
while Javaid Ali and Tony Hewston conceded just
44 runs between them off 18 overs at the other
end. As Wycombe edged past 100 they then lost
another couple of wickets with a good catch in
the deep by Hewston and Ali trapping top-scorer
John Eyles (45) LBW. With 22 runs still required
for victory the game was still in the balance.
Two hard chances went begging in the field
before Wycombe finally got home with 3 overs to
spare.
The 2's are now at home to
promotion-chasing OMTs this week in their final
league game of the season where a win is needed
to give them any realistic chance of avoiding
the drop.
